To give some context, tension was high in the village, because a cohort of bandits and angry spirits were harassing them on all fronts, planting seeds of their degeneracy. The villagers were therefore very suspicious of outsiders, and many were met with outright hostility.

Meanwhile, the swordsman - having had a history of addiction - had caught glimpses of GrímR trying to act inconspicuous around various parts of town and recognized the stranger's behavior as that of a dealer's. Believing that GrímR had been sent by the outside gangs to corrupt influenceable minds, the swordsman pinned him down and offered him an ultimatum, hoping it would scare the strange man away. It was just as well, because had he known GrímR's true purpose - to reap his pending soul and bring small comforts to those who would mourn him - the very thought might have driven the swordsman mad.
