Not to get on your case about "starts," I actually thought it was pretty interesting, intentional or not. It reminds me of the way Gollum from Lord of the Rings talks... When he has the Ring, something inside him wants desperately to get rid of it. When he doesn't have the Ring, he will do whatever it takes to get it back.

In the phrase 'they start', 'start' is a verb, not a noun/subject...
The possessive 's' is used with an apostrophe, for example: The dog's fur was wet.
