Story: There she stood, wrapped in silken clothing and sandals, a bow in her hand, Zeus beneath her, and an array of targets to hit. Her heart was thumping; Maybe she had acted too quickly? Maybe she should've taken up one of the other disciplines first, something that gave her time to at least practice firing a bow for the first time. Either was, now it was too late, and soon her name echoed across the spacious shooting range to call her up as the next contestant.
It was the first mythological event she ever had the opportunity to join, centered in the roman empire and split up into four disciplines well-suited for its era: Archery, dressage, bareback riding and the big chariot race to finish it off.
Ambitious as Aaliyah was, she immediately signed up for all of them, and despite never even having held a bow, she went straight for archery as her first event to complete. Might as well get it over with quickly, right? Zeus scrape impatiently in the sand, her fist clenched tightly around the bow's grip. She had seen people fire them dozens of times, and it couldn't be that hard.
With a lightly tap of her heels into Zeus' sides, he ran off into the arena, the crowd erupting into applause as it did for every new contestant. Some had almost hit a bullseye with every shot, others fell off their horse within the first few moments, but the crowd now wanted to know what kind of contestant the blonde girl would be. She was in a mild panic inside, but radiated confidence, something that the crowd immediately latched on to with baited breath.
Zeus' hooves beat a dull rhythm into the loose sand, making not only him, but also Aaliyah nervous while she knocked the first arrow, drew the bow and and shot – With a wooden thwack, her first of three attempts earned her no points, hitting the white outer ring. Thwack, thwack, the next two arrows hit the first target with similar results.
Aaliyah was getting frustrated, repeatedly tugging at Zeus' reigns to make him change his paths and give her a better shot. Thwack, she hit again, this time a better shot. Zeus was growing restless between the unsteady ground, the loud crowd and Aaliyah's constant corrections. Arrows whistled through the air as they raced past their destination, hitting the sands meters off of their mark.
Thwack, her third target now, only her fifth hit out of a possible nine, with barely any even earning her points. Zeus had started actively buck, throwing her aim off completely and kicking up sand while just attempted to finish the event now. Even someone as stubborn as her saw this was getting nowhere.
She reached for her quiver again for the last of the four targets; It was empty. Zeus' bucking had tossed her last three shots out of the quiver. The rules stated that a contestant's run was finished either when the time had run out or the contestant ran out of arrows.
The only thing left to do now was calming down Zeus, writing this off as a lesson learned and waiting for one of her best disciplines: Dressage.
