Owen Van Houten, a young boy from Ohio wishes to toughen up and learn how to defend himself. Luckily he has a friend/big sister figure in Mary Love, a former boxer now a teacher at the rec center. Despite his skittish nature Owen was intrigued by boxing watching the sparring sessions at the rec center. Until he finally mustered up the courage to ask Mary Love to train him. Mary, noticing him watchin the spars, impressed with his courage, and thinking the boi was cute, takes him under her wing free of charge. It was not easy for Owen but he managed to get a decent grasp on the skills needed in the ring, not being extraordinary but enough for a true test of his skills in a live spar.

Xiao, a Chinese Immigrant lives in the same town as Owen, but trains somewhere else. Mary, being friends with Xiao’s trainer, asks to setup a small spar between the two to see how they are coming along. Xiao is pretty indifferent to the situation and very confident in his own skills, while Owen is shaking in his boots trying to gather up his courage. But upon meeting Xiao in the ring a rather awkward situation occurred as Owen tries to cover his eyes while looking at Xiao. When asked why Owen explains that he doesn’t think he should fight a girl who isn’t wearing a sports bra. That devastating blow to his ego sent Xiao reeling as Mary had to explain Xiao was a boy to Owen. The blonde getting flustered and embarrassed jumping to conclusions due to Xiao’s long hair and as Owen says “Cute face”, that being the second blow to Xiao’s ego. The Chinese boy was furious at Owen’s comments, but also felt a little….. Flattered by them, no one called him cute before. Still he was determined to put Owen in his place and then figure out these feelings later.

The spar lasted only 2 rounds with Xiao dominating the whole time clearly showing his experience which was slightly more than Owen’s. The blonde took multiple hits barely able to defend, part of his brain telling him to stop and just take a fall. However another part of his brain along with the cheers of Mary Love encouraging him pushed him forward eventually mounting an impressive offense against Xiao. Still in the end with a clean hook to the face Owen was downed and the spar was over. Owen had some tears welling up in his eyes but regardless thanked Xiao for the spar. Xiao insults Owen a bit mostly due to his comments of thinking he was a girl, confirming his “Manliness” to him. Mary Love, impressed with the both of them, decides with Xiao’s trainer to make the two Boxing Buddies help each other train and improve and spar constantly. Both are unsure how to feel about this new situation.
