It took years of perfecting but with a combination of machinery and magical properties he created a watch that, when wound up, can send the one who holds it backwards and forwards. He, of course, wasted no time exploring the era's, sometimes gathering their technology to examine but he was careful about what he did. The world could fall to pieces if the watch fell into the wrong hands.
