Description Here's another picture for the 100 pictures thing. Now, I'm pretty sure the Mountains of Madness in At the Mountains of Madness aren't actual, specific mountains. Even if they were specific mountains, I'm pretty sure the Elder Things wouldn't use that name. Even if they did, they're not going to be naming another mountain the "Inclines of Insanity". But I'm just too close to the end to care. I'm so close I can smell it. It smells like victory!

Older generations had a whale of a time naming things.

You find and colonize a new world, you might as well give it amusing names.

I think all thyat can safely be put under "willing suspension of disbelief for the sake of a joke."

On the other hand, the picture does depict a time-travelling fairy talking to an ancient space-travelling animal/mineral/vegetable alien. I suspect the suspension of disbelief is straining already.

Oh, I've seen things that streched it to a membrane-thin sheet. But then, I'm a fan of Terry Pratchett, Monty Python, and Star Wars. My suspension of disbelief may be more willing than others...

Can't be too careful. Broken Suspension of Disbelief can lead to bad things. Not sure what, but I'm sure it's bad.

That Elder Thing reminds me of an elephant.

One wonders what shady business Alair is doing at the Mountains of Madness... no doubt attempting to awaken some devilish beast from beyond the stars? Or possibly just on the lookout for one of the infamous Elder Thing coffee shops? Who knows, who knows...

I suppose it did turn out a bit more elephantine than alien... tine.

I suspect Alair just went there as a tourist attraction and then planned to buy one of those t-shirts with "I've been to the Mountains of Madness" on the front and on the back there this sigil that drives everyone mad, but it's much later than Alair realizes that Elder Things don't wear t-shirts so he couldn't buy one.

Or maybe he's just trying to get his bearings.

Sounds reasonable.
