Fun - I am curious though: do you know what was used to seal the tips of the topes? It looks like some form of plastic, rubber, or wax...

Could see how that would work for "natural fibres"... would mean some minor maintenance if they wax starts chipping though.
I have only worked with synthetic ropes - their sinching is easier as it is just heated till the fibres melt into themselves

Synthetic as in that plastic stuff? That stuff eats skin *shudders*

Synthetic as in a nylon blend. If you buy them from Yacht shops and the like they don't "eat skin" unless you run them at speed and cause rope burn but, that is the same for natural fibre as well.
The biggest advantage is that there is no risk of fibres remaining in the person (both natural and synthetic have their pro's and con's )
