Azmal — Glimpse Into Making Armor

Description I wouldn't call this a tutorial, but you can kind of think of it as a guide, or maybe more of an overview of how I went about making a piece of my armor.

If you like this, please comment or fav it. Perhaps I shall do more in the future if it is liked.

Also if the file size is simply too big, let me know. I wanted it to be big enough to see what's going on but it may be too big to see the whole picture, figuratively speaking anyway. That and my monitor is kind of large so it can be easy to make the images too big.

This is a great and awesome tooling. I would like to try the scale effect as well. Do you remember the tool number and where you got it at? A new fan and new to DA. )

I'm sure you've got your favorite tools to work with- by that I mean brand or type rather than stamp shape. I'd be interested to hear your preferences if you don't mind. I've done some small scale leather work so I have the basic idea even if I have never attempted anything on the scale you work in. I absolutely LOVE your medieval Aquaman piece and it has added some inspiration to a mechanical mermaid piece I'm working on for a steampunk convention. Thank you for sharing!

Hey, I really like this. I'm just getting into doing leatherwork for armor, used to build saddles. I wonder, what weight do you use mostly? I'm working with 9-10 and it seems too heavy for most projects, especially helmets.

For armor you can use anywhere from 7 to 16+oz  I usually use 10oz and often have many areas of overlap6

Wow, it's so cool that someone so young can make such finery. It melts my face, really. You have a hand for sculpture and threedimensional objects. Your sense of design, too, is well-developed, even considering client's choices and wishes. You must really enjoy your work

That's always great! How long does it usually take you to make a full suit?

bibleoftears [2009-04-20 15:03:52 +0000 UTC]

An awesome lookup on your work, indeed. I had no idea about wet molding being used to give shape and flow to pieces and that tools like that stamp-pencil thing were used for consecutive details. I'm starting to seriously consider taking leatherworking classes.

Thanks you for giving me inspiration
Keep up the good work, thumbs up from Argentina!

MissLizz [2008-08-02 03:35:25 +0000 UTC]

Awesome.

Question though, do you use a regular old diamond-tipped awl to punch the lacing holes or something more durable?
What weight is the leather? I'd guess about 10 oz. from its thickness.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Azmal In reply to MissLizz [2008-08-02 12:07:40 +0000 UTC]

incorrect and correct. I use a 4 pronged 'thingy' to punch the holes. No clue what it's called, I just use it. Yes, 10oz : )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissLizz In reply to Azmal [2008-08-02 16:48:12 +0000 UTC]

Cool. I've seen those 4-pronged things before, must save a lot of time from the single bladed awl.
