Azmal — Glimpse Into Making Armor

Description I wouldn't call this a tutorial, but you can kind of think of it as a guide, or maybe more of an overview of how I went about making a piece of my armor.

If you like this, please comment or fav it. Perhaps I shall do more in the future if it is liked.

Also if the file size is simply too big, let me know. I wanted it to be big enough to see what's going on but it may be too big to see the whole picture, figuratively speaking anyway. That and my monitor is kind of large so it can be easy to make the images too big.

Haha, looking at this is kinda like watching How It's Made on the Discovery Channel. Since I have Pokemon Ranch on, I even get that easy listening background music.

And yes, that means this is cool. :3 I like seeing how things are put together and love when people do stuff like this.

Yeah, this is awesome! I was wondering how you did this- actually, I still am! But as this is a guide more than a tutorial, it's fine.
I'm most interested in how you shape the leather, the "wet-molding" part.
The file size is perfect, the width doesn't matter as much as the height, because you can just scroll over to see the next picture beside it.

I actually like the "mistake" more than I do the straight line across. I guess that makes this greave uneven, but t'would be a lot of work to go back and redo...

What an amazing photo set! Thank you so much for posting.

I really want to learn more about advanced leatherworking skills. (wet shaping, tooling...) Any books that you would recommend, or web pages?

I can make flat bands and flat shapes just fine...but have not yet learned to "sculpt" in the medium.

Beautiful work as always, I love the way you can have two colors of dye mingling...you are definatly using something other than what I use. *laughs*

Awesome! It's nice to see the behind-the-scenes work, especially as one of my friends wants me to make him a set of spaulders when we get back to school... eep...

File size is good since you can scroll horizontally; if it were a whole lot smaller you wouldn't be able to tell what was going on too well, but the detail is good as-is.

At long last! Loved the 'glimpse'! I realize it may not be feasible for every piece you make, but I would love to see more of these. When I saw the scales before I was impressed, but seeing you with the tool in hand really drives home the time you spent making this.
Great stuff!

I think this is cool. I've done leather work off and on since I was little, and my grandmother gave me her tools. I've stuck to smaller projects though, like wall hangings. But this is sort of like a tutorial for me. Thank you very much for posting this. I like seeing the steps taken to make something.

Azmal In reply to Beledra [2008-07-31 19:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Sorry if I'm being daft but what do you mean by sizes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Beledra In reply to Azmal [2008-07-31 20:00:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, first sorry for my bad English, this is not my mother tongue.
I mean... your armor is to be used, I supose. Each person have a diferent size: longer or shorter legs or arms, more or less thin or fat...
Do you use a model to customize it or do you make random armors?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Azmal In reply to Beledra [2008-07-31 21:08:07 +0000 UTC]

Most of my armor is commissioned and made to fit the one who purchases / orders it.
The armor here is being made for me so it is a lot easier to measure : )
Thanks
