This is the weirdest beetle I think I've ever seen. Nature is strange. This could be right out of a sci-fi novel...otherworldly design. I vote this as your very best capture. But it didn't win by much as all your photos are magnificent.

You have some amazing macro photography... If you don't mind me asking what kind of equipment do you use to get this much detail. Again, AMAZING!

Well, I would say that the use of a flash makes it possible for me.
A heavily diffused flash gives me light enough to get the best DoF and to bring out all the details without burning out any colors.

what kind of macro lens do you use... I have been looking at them forever and am going crazy trying to choose... and your camera body, Nikon? Cannon? I have a cannon and feel like my pictures are angry with me sometimes... I recently started shooting in RAW and that has helped but not as much as I would have liked.

I have a Canon 7D.
The macro lenses I use mainly are a Tamron 180mm (for this weevil pic for instance) and a MPE-65mm, which is a special lens but it is awesome.
May I ask what you have and what you would like to acomplish?

Right now I have a canon rebel eos t3i, I am using the two lenses that came with it and a magnification (filter style lens) I am getting some results that I like from distance but I would like to get more close up photos... I am able to get close to bugs that don't spook easy... Β
Β but even that is not as clear as I would like.
Β On the rare occasion that I actually get a shot I like it is not as detailed

Do you have a name for the lenses you're using?

canon zoom lens EF 75-300 and 18-55Β
Then I have a generic magnification lens that screws onto the end of either of the lenses (like a filter) it came in 1x 2x 4x and 10x magnification
It is like these but they are not the same brand I have...Β www.walmart.com/ip/Altura-Photβ¦

I have bad experience with zoom lenses and screw on lenses.
I would recommend a macro lens on 100mm, or 50mm depending on the price. Then they can be combined with the screw on lenses.
I guess the 75-300 could get you close enough with the zoom but it will be more or less impossible to get good detail due to the distance.

Yeah, I find it difficult to focus on tiny moving things with the screw ons. I am working on getting a new camera for the holidays... As I currently have canon I was thinking of switching to Nikon (as all of my point and shoots before the canon were nikon) Do you have any advice on a body to acquire? I am defiantly going to have to get a macro lens for the new camera.

It depends on how much money you would like to plow down in the macro business
The reason I would advise to stick with Canon is the MPE-lens that only works with Canon (and Sony emount via an adapter). It costs a fortune but it is worth every dime when it comes to quality. Its the only lens on the market that works beyond the 1:1 ratio (up to 1:5) which means it pretty much works like a microscope.
If you think that this is too expensive I would recommend getting a fixed macro lens between 50 to 100mm and adding a raynox 250 clip on. Also getting a flash or a diffuser that allows you to use the flash close to the target will make a huge diffrence.
Changing camera itself wont do miracles by my experience, more that the pixel quality.
Hope this is useful information
