Perhaps the greatest opening paragraph ever written for a novel.Β

If you ever get a chance to get your hands on a copy of "The First Man", you must read it. It's Camus' unfinished novel, the manuscript of which was found in the trunk of his car after the accident.

I believe the first paragraph shoulld set the table and be just as relevant at the end of the novel as at the beginning. I don't know Red Harvest, but I imagine after reading the book, the loop is closed and we find out why it's caled Poisonville.

Regarding American literature, I'll nominste "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes as best openig paragraph that sets the table and has meaning until the end. You may remember it from the film "Charly" starring Cliff Robertson.Β

Dr. Strauss says I shoud rite down what I think and remembir and evrey thing that happins to me from now on. I dont no why but he says its importint so they will see if they can use me. I hope they use me becaus Mss Kinnian says mabye they can make me smart. I want to be smart. My name is Charlie Gordon I werk in Donners bakery where Mr Donner gives me 11 dollers a week and bred or cake if I want. I am 32 yeres old and next munth is my brithday. I tolld dr Strauss and perfesser Nemur I cant rite good but he says it dont matter he says I shud rite just like I talk and like I rite compushishens in Miss Kinnians class at the beekmin collidge center rof retarted adults where I go to lern 3 times a week on my time off. Dr. Strauss says to rite a lot evrything I think and evrything that happins to me but I cant think anymor because I have nothing to rite so I will close for today. . .yrs truly Charlie Gordon.

My favorite book when I was 17. My English teacher made us read it. I also haven't reread it. I should. You're right, putting the flowers on Algernon's grave was symbolic of how Charly knew he was going to die. The only thing that separates us from the animals (besides art) is the knowledge that we are going to die. Still we all live in denial and that is the secret to our success as a species. Animals live in the now, rational humans live in the past, lunatics live in the future.Β

Generals always fight the last war. They fought korea like it was WWII. They fought Vietnam like it was Korea. And so on.
I know, living in the past is sad. But that's human nature.Β
The only way to stay sane is to live in the now. It's hard, but very rewarding. Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die. Who said that? Henry VIII? Jesus? Shakespeare? I forget.

The word "prophet" originally meant "poet".Β

Wow, I didn't expect that photo!
A friend loaned me a copy of The First Man, and I dutifully returned it to her. I havent been able to find a pdf version. One lady online said she found a copy in a used bookstore in Denton TX. Amazon has it for $12 USD.Β

Oh cool, thanks. Yes, the link worked. I'll download it on my tablet. 14 days should be plenty of time to reread it. Great tip!Β
Wish we had libraries here. That's the one thing I really miss about the US. I used to love to read outdated books to find out the truth about things without the Google filter. Library books are the best source of "alternate facts".

Just shows what an artist can do without recorded music and video.Β

He was hot back then and he's be hot today. I imagine in the middle ages there were a lot of homely people, and Albrecht, being an artist and very handsome, must have "emphasized the divine of the artist" in bed as well as at the easel.Β

Well if Monty Python broadened your cultural awareness, good for them. If I were a spy catured by an enemy, all they would have to do is show me anything Python for 24 hours straight, asnd I'd spill the beans. As an American, I only found minute 4 and minute 6 of the clip to approach anything I'd call humor. The rest seemed amateurish and sophomoric.

I suppose the British were so overeducated and blasΓ© that Monty Python was a real knee slapper back in the day. They pale in comparison with Mel Brooks, who was making real comedy at the same time on the other side of the world.Β
