Laurel chanced a look back as Pointe Blank rounded the corner and glimpsed Rad Red’s muscular form eating up the ground with the greatest of ease. She cursed into the mike, causing Pointe to startle. The handler refocused. “Keep going dear – those blasted -------s are playing with us – but you know what? Let them. We can do this. If they want to give us false hope, this extra space, we will take it. We’ve got this. Go, boy!” The cat below her snarled as brown, fur-clad pistons pounded against the frosted rock. Laurel saw the shedu’s ears twitch as he tracked the other cat crunching through the fragile snow behind them. Breath puffed out like dragon smoke around them both as Pointe Blank gathered himself to clear a stone-walled path ahead, hopping up onto the first wall to bound well clear of the next.

The other handler didn’t feel the need to say anything to the red dynamo galloping beneath him. Rad Red knew this path like the back of his white paws. He adjusted his feet, rising a little as Red prepared to leap the path. He wondered if Red was laughing at the other two. Did he enjoy giving the young riders they played with false hope as much as he did? Did Red laugh inside when they swept by right at the end like a falcon stooping past a pigeon, just to terrify the other riders at how close they came by? Red landed lightly in the snow on the other side to the sound of his rider’s chuckle as the young shedu and his handler ran their feet off just ahead.

My shedu, Pointe Blank 786ST with rider Laurel Swiftfoot , up against Rad Red 144 on a rouge run through the desert outside of Mezza for her Prospective Beast test. Rare precipitation has fallen as snow this winter, making the footing that much nastier.
