Description The Dragoon Kain Highwind on Mount Ordeals ...

Somehow I had issues how to set the lights. It was supposed to be more purple but it ended up into green
It might seem to look a bit dark but I find it's well the outcome.

Enjoy
And a YAY for the strange looking rocks!

Hi! Here from ProjectComment:

I love what you're aiming for here, and I think you come really close to nailing it perfectly. I think you did some amazing work with the planet and its moon. The individual stars and the misty mix of colors across the sky work really well, too.

If you're looking to improve the piece, I'd concentrate on the lower half. The composition works well, but I think there's a bit of a lack of depth between the foreground and background -- I can't tell how distant the rocks/mountains in back are supposed to be. Also, I think the forearm/wrist areas of the figure could use a little more definition -- they're a bit soft and round at the moment, which stands out in contrast to the sharp detail of the planets above. The armor, however, is well done -- I like your use of the highlights, but mostly that you included the helm -- it'd be very easy to give into teh desire to show the character's face, to try to convey what they're thinking, but I like that you left that aside. It makes it possible for them to be thinking about anything, leaving it up to the viewer's own mood, in a way.

Just a couple of thoughts I had -- really good work!

And your couple of thoughts are helpful.
I might like things with some kind of luminescent elements but I guess that I highlited the mountains from afar a bit too much. I know, distant perspective it's a bit darker but after seeing some similar art with highlited background in the night I wanted to give it a try, too.
About anatomy, I'm still at practicing. I've been drawing those kind for character for just about a year so .... I guess there's still room for improvement.

So again. Thanks for pointing out the things you noticed on my art!

I think the dark look is good. It makes it look very alien, and you have just enough bright highlights in the right places to balance the values out.

Very cool and very imaginative. It takes me away for a moment to this other world.Β

I make just about EVERYTHING in GIMP, so I love to see another GIMP artist!!! Although I'm stunned that you used 2.6? Why not 2.8? I've read that 2.9 is already in Beta and should be coming out soon. It will have a canvas rotate feature which I'm excited about.

Since you put this in ProjectComment I will note that I feel in some places, you seem to be "drawing within the box". Many stars and mist areas seem to coincidentally stop before the edge of the canvas. Even though I know it's not 100% true, because I can see you go off the canvas in many places... but something just speaks to me. Maybe it is the top edge, and the right edge mostly. The sky seems to hug the edges a bit.

I know that was supposed to be more purple and ended more into gree. But I'm wondering why alien if it's rather a fantasy world? x'D

As you said it ... ooh, what a juvenile mistake that I missed adding some clouds and /or stars onto the edges of the picture. How embarassing
I really need to fix it. Thanks a lot for giving this great point of detail!

Yeah, I'm a GIMPie I know that they're rare. But I find that this program is a great alternative to Photoshop.
2.9 will have a canvas rotate feature like on SAI? Sounds great!
I used the 2.8 version but I wasn't satisfied with it. First the brush dynamics didn't work on my Tablet. And then as I changed it into the settings the dynamics with program and tablet worked but there was a huge delay if I draw a line so ... it wasn't that well if I'm honest :\ That's why I changed to my older 2.6 version.

Technically speaking, anything that is not on Earth is an alien world That's all I meant. And the way you have 2 planets or moons there, clearly was not Earth, so I just thought "alien".

Sorry if you didn't like my way of saying it. Maybe I could say "Fantasy World" instead.

Yeah GIMP can be buggy like that. I had problems with tablet in Win 7, after a lot of reading it was something about GTK in Win 7 being outdated. After I updated to the latest windows everything worked fine. But that's cool you use 2.6 anyway, as long as it works for you

Ah that's why Β
No, it's alright I just learned a new term for this

Well, I read in the GIMP forum that many users who used 2.8 weren't that satisfied than expected. But yeah, with the program you got used to it you can still make pretty things

I really like this piece! The overall lighting is done very well, and your background is extraordinary. However, there is one huge issue I have with the piece, and that is the moon(s). It's simply not possible for them to be lit at that angle. There aren't any moon phases or special events that make such a lighting event possible (Although you didn't add stars in the dark side, so I'll give you credit for that). Aside from that detail, though, I feel like this piece is very well done. Although the lighting is, as I said before, very nice, it is rather dark, making it hard to see the figure sitting on the rock- if that's what they're doing, anyways. I feel like the lighting on the hills is also a bit odd with how you drew them, but that could very well just be me. Although it might seem small, I'm rather impressed with your tree off to the left- it can be tough to get branches correct, but I think you nailed it. Lastly, although your background is quite possibly the most amazing thing I have seen all day, I feel like it's a little too busy to be a background. It's hard to take your eyes off of it, and it's not even supposed to be the main focus of the piece.
I hope my opinion helped, and that you can continue to improve you art ^^

The mountains? Seems that I should darken them more.
Hmm, kinda strange. When I'm browsing through space-themed art on dA I saw some moons and planets being to be lit in this way. But I guess my problem might be that there isn't a kind of a source of light

Seems that there are still things I haven't looked out yet.Β
I didn't see the little flaws. Thanks for the insight.

And the moon thing is a common problem- There are many moon looks that appear in art but actually can't appear in real life

Haha, well now you know you can count on references~ Trust me after painting with references awhile you'll see its easier to paint from your mind because you're building your visual library every time you refer to something when you paint. Practice hard and good luck! Cant wait to see more from you.
