This is my take on the common "different systems" flag design challenge.

I have tended to avoid these, as I have a hard time differentiating between some of them and dog-whistling to far-right propaganda; an excuse to put swastikas on things and suggest that Islamism will spread through Europe.

So, to prove that it could be done in good faith, I did Germany. I wanted to prove that flag design is about more than just taking the same flag and defacing it with symbols. (I will submit a non-defaced version in the comments below.) I want to demonstrate that, even with a very limited colour palette, the proportions and structure can evoke totally different ways of seeing the same people. All of these flags have a deep connection with different historical and ideological movements, and are mostly based on real flags to varying degrees.

I also wanted to do one more thing that these challenges fail to do, but could. That would be to show that many of these "systems" are really just two values of the same underlying ideologies. To say they represent "moderate vs extreme" is not quite correct, as all of these systems have their hardcore partisans. Perhaps one might think of it as "light side vs dark side" versions, wherein the "dark side" is not necessarily to be interpreted as the evil version, but rather the version that has historically tended to not play well with others.

So this chart has Left, Centre, and Right wing ideologies, with the more moderate ones on top, and the more radical ones on the bottom. I didn't associate these with parties per se, since this is supposed to be abstract, and I made a pretty damn good effort to avoid symbolism that alludes to the goose-stepping elephant in the room.
