2 fullbodies -- weekly prompt -- a gift -- a background
Bao was hungry again, his middle aching to be fed. He decided to head to the river, to see if he could catch some more fish. He knew he needed to practice, but he was still lazy. His stomach gave an angry grumble as he walked through the forest, stepping over branches and ferns. He came to the river, and looked at the fish, annoyed that he would have to catch them.
As he stepped out of the forest, he noticed another gro; he was even more annoyed that another gro might watch him fail at catching the fish. Bao glared at the other gro, but he didn't seem the gro's he had seen that came from the town. They were loud and obnoxious and they didn't know how to walk quietly or catch food. He was still wondering how they survived.
Now sitting at the river, he stuck his front claw into the water, cold. He shuddered, gross. The other gro noticed them then, watching quietly as Bao stepped into the water, making futile attempts to catch the smaller salmon swimming around in the river. This gro seemed different, he didn't try to talk to him, not that he would understand the nasally noises the other gro made. He spent the next half hour trying to catch a fish with his claws, failing. Miserably.
After watching Bao continue to suck at catching fish, Mattie walked over slowly. Head down, showing no signs of aggression. He got close enough to where he could show Bao something. He stood stock still, watching with one of his forepaws held above the water, waiting. One of the fish was stupid enough to come close, and Mattie stabbed the poor thing with his claws. Spearing and pinning it in the water. Bao watched cautiously.
Mattie walked back to the small beach and set the fish next to him, offering it to Bao. Bao was cautious at first, but walked close and snatched the fish away, taking it a few paces away and eating it ravenously. Mattie sat with Bao, watching and coaching Bao. It took all night, but Bao finally caught a fish. He did his best to smile at Mattie. Mattie smiled back, and they eventually parted ways.
Maybe not all gros were bad, Bao thought. He walked away back into the forest to find somewhere safe to sleep. Safe from Sheke.
