Before anything else, Medea values the wellbeing of her family. She’s in the war to send money back home – nothing more, nothing less. While she’s friendly and sociable, Medea avoids making close bonds with others in the army. After all, she’s resolved to survive, no matter the battle outcomes, and has no qualms about abandoning the army to do so. Still, her naturally lighthearted personality shines through. Medea loves teasing others, especially those younger than her, and can’t help but be protective of those she views as friends. She won’t let you get close, but if you want a nice chat over some tea, Medea is your gal.

History

Medea grew up as Maddie in a rural farming village, in perhaps the poorest household out of the other hobbles. The winters were cold and long, and out of her many siblings, half died of illness or starvation before the age of five. When Maddie turned eight, it was apparently her turn. After an especially terrible harvest and an argument between her drunk parents, little Maddie was dragged out of the house, into the nearby forest, and tied to a tree. Despite her cries and pleas, her father walked away without looking back. As dusk settled in and snow began to fall, Maddie wrapped herself into a tight ball to conserve whatever heat she could. She felt her fingers go numb and her whole body lock up. Then, darkness.
She woke up inside a tent and underneath warm blankets. An older woman with a stern expression hunched over her frail body, and asked for her name.
“Maddie? No, no, we need something flashy.” The woman muttered, unimpressed with the simple farm girl name. “Hm… Medea has a nice ring to it, no? How do you feel about joining my little crew, Medea?”
Since then, the frail Maddie, abandoned to die in the woods, became Medea. She joined The Best of Nohrian Tricks and Spectacles, the traveling circus that rescued her, and trained to be particularly handy with a bow and arrows. The leader of the troupe, Ringmistress Maja, was like a mother to the members, and taught Medea how to read and write. Others in the circus – from Jason the fire breather to the juggling Boudix twins – made up the rest of her odd, adopted family. Medea grew particularly close to Kresimir, the resident knife thrower and unabashed flirt, and the two were inseparable as sister and brother.
Though the troupe never made it big in major cities (and certainly not the Nohrian capital, Windmire), it achieved small popularity in fringe towns scattered throughout the empire. Medea, with her dark complexion, accurate trick shots, and reputation to steal but never redeem the hearts of farm hands, became known as the “Dark Cupid”. On top of literacy, theatrical skills, and the value of family, the troupe also taught Medea how to steal. They never stole anything big, usually a mere ring or jeweled dagger from their more fancily dressed (and usually quite obnoxious) audience members. The troupe traveled for years, bringing a few days of festival to small towns and leaving with extra coins from the pockets of rich folks.
All the fun and games came to a crashing end one night, when the circus tent was set on fire. The culprit was apparently the jealous son of a local landlord who had seen Medea’s sworn brother, Kresimir, flirting with one of the local girls. Though no troupe members’ lives were lost, a few suffered grievous burns, and Kresimir lost an arm. In a single night, The Best of Nohrian Tricks and Spectacles was no more. Most of the troupe’s supplies and goods were licked up by the flames, and medical expenses used up the last of everyone’s savings.
Though everyone remained together, to survive, some resorted to street performances and others to crime. For a few months, Medea used her archery talents to hunt and sell the pelts and meat. Then, news of the King gathering an army reached their ears: a war was coming. Medea enlisted without a second thought. As a soldier, she would have a better (and steadier) source of income than as a rugged hunter. She left her family with promises to send the majority of her wages back and, perhaps more importantly, return alive.

She saw Letum drop. Down, down towards the unforgiving Earth, whom he and his steed had defied for so long, but no more. Medea was never one to be reckless or selfless, but somewhere along the few months she spent in the army, she had allowed herself to get attached. She always thought that, save for her family, she would gladly watch the rest of the world burn. She was supposed to stay alive at all costs, yet-

Medea broke her promise. The "Dark Cupid" of the ratty circus traded her raven wings for those of a dove's, and for that feat of holy magic, endured a permanent physical cost. Though she was dragged back from the edge of death by Fenera's beckoning and Lorelei's diligent care, Medea would suffer chronic fatigue and coughing fits for the rest of her life. Whatever she sacrificed, however, she would count it all as gain: Letum was alive, and she had found others to bear her newfound vulnerability with.
