Description This is not a poem. It's a found piece built from the article CIA Report Details Interrogation Techniques
by Dina Temple-Raston

Here's a little bit of it:
Interrogators threatened to kill and possibly sexually assault members of detainees' families — which violates anti-torture laws. And there were more basic abuses, such as stepping on shackles, washing someone with a wire brush, blowing smoke constantly in a detainee's face until he started to throw up and dousing detainees with water.

There was also something called "the hard takedown," which essentially meant grabbing a detainee and throwing him to the floor before moving him to a sleep-deprivation cell.

The report describes an episode in July 2002, before the Justice Department had formally authorized harsh methods, in which a CIA interrogator grabbed a detainee's neck and restricted the flow of the carotid artery until the detainee began to faint. The CIA then "shook the detainee to wake him." He did that same pressure-point technique two more times.

There are a number of ominous entries. One begins: "By November 2002, the agency had Abu Zubaydah and another high value detainee, Abd al-Nashiri, in custody." It is followed by a large block of blacked out text and then the sentence "and the Office of Medical Services provided medical care to the detainees." Clearly something bad happened before the medical services were called in, but it is unclear what it was.

Also redacted are the names and locations where these abuses took place.

That last sentence in your artist's comments... I'm writing that down. There's a poem in that, and even if there isn't, it's worth tattooing on one's skin.

Excellently executed concept Dave: like the piece, you make brevity and what is not said wield so much power and pathos. Puts me in mind of something someone was telling me once about the potency of 'zero form'-- I can't recall enough of the conversation to comprehend his notion of 'zero form' now though, which is a pity.

b1gfan In reply to pseudometry [2009-08-30 04:38:59 +0000 UTC]

You are the very soul of kindness and supportive consideration Jamie I am curious about the zero form idea - what it might be and all.

After some deliberation, I decided to base this poem's form, albeit loosely, on the style of epic verse generally found in translations of The Odyssey. That ended up being a fairly large departure from my original concept for the poem which was that it would be a series of 6 four line stanzas, the numbers totalling 24 (one for each book of the original epic). In the end that was too self-serving and inordinately "crafty" an approach which I was indulging at the expense of the reading experience so I ditched it.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment my friend. I always hang on every word.

I recall some reference to the power generally of silence or inactivity wielded deliberately where you'd usually expect something to be said or done. I think I'll google it.

Well kudos making that call! A tricky one indeed; it can be so hard to ditch grand ambitions/experiments for the sake of the reader's experience (which writer was it who advised other writers to 'learn to kill your darlings?' But generally I think when you sense that you've indulged yourself your intuition is usually accurate.

My pleasure

I have feeling that Abu Gharib and this recent revelation are only the tip of the ice berg.

I always wondered how the Germans felt in the post-War years, but we may have to deal with a good bit of shame ourselves in the next two decades.

That's a chilling connection, but not an inappropriate one. I remember being a little nervous about that "German feeling" in the early 2000's when we opened up a Department of Homeland Security. "Homeland"; "Fatherland" - it all feels a little too close to me.

Gleamchaser In reply to b1gfan [2009-08-30 01:34:58 +0000 UTC]

You're right. Whenever I see more jingoism than moral arguments I get nervous. All the misleading names and double-talk. I recently read Brave New World and Farenheit 451 and they seemed very timely. Of course, they were timely in the years they were written, also full of war propaganda and jingoism.

You know, "homeland" rather implies colonialism. As in, we hold other territory but are only concerned with defending our HQ...
