Description Another new one. This one was a 'speedpaint'. At least it was for me! 3.5 hours or so. It was actually challenging not getting into the itty bitty details like most of my other work and I didn't take too much time to go back and refine my shapes... All the same I'm pleased with the result for the time it took!

Just really like the coloring of this piece.  The green lightsaber reflecting off the walker is just amazing.  The piece tells a story similar to how the opening of A New Hope, with the rebel being chased by the star destroyer.  It elicit very similar themes of how the rebels are fighting against the odds.  They're outgunned and outmatched, but the green light kind of illuminates how the rebels are fighting a guerilla battle in all parts of the empire.  Probably reading a little too much into it but it's possible to read it that way and I really like this piece.
In terms of improvements, just minor nitpick.  The jedi's arms look a little out of proportion with the forearms looking bigger than the rest of the body.  The choice of hairstyle is also a little simplistic compared to the amazing detail on the walker.  It's still an amazing piece and just minor things that stood out for me.

I definitely see what you mean about the proportions in the jedi's arms and the helmet hair.  Honestly, I had a deadline of 3.5 hours I was trying to hit (and still went over by about 15 mins or so) for a little contest I was doing among friends, so I just wasn't able to put as much as I wanted into it.  Still great feedback though and I'll be sure to watch my proportions next time.

Thanks very much for your comments though, I agree that the feeling of it is a little similar to New Hope.  The green lighting was definitely my favorite part, it really gives a feeling of triumph.  Thanks again!

The background kind of reminds me of a Mayan temple with how grey it is. Cool, though; great job especially with the green light the lightsaber casts!

Hiya! here!

What a lovely, atmospheric, interesting piece! I love how it practically looks like a storyboard drawing: it tells us a good story, with a nice cliffhanger! Will this young warrior face the imminent danger? Is he strong enough? Won't he be surrounded by enemies? How this confront will end?
I love pieces that actually tell us a history, for simple it is, it's more interesting than just a shot of somebody posing.

Now, to the nitty-gritty:
I do think you should upload your images at a smaller size, dear. I don't know your internet specs, but I do know that larger sizes tend to take a longer time to upload; they put a lot of stress on the site's server and on your internet provider data as well. Not to mention that, of course, anybody could steal your images, make high-quality prints out of it without your permission, and sell them at some convention. And, don't be fooled; people eventually will do that. The fact that you didn't add your signature or even a watermark makes it even easier to do it. And it'll be you that won't receive the money, and probably have to sue the other person, and that suuuuucks.
"But that's only a speedpaint! I did this for funsies!", you might say. Or rather, "I'm not trying to sell anything, I'm a hobbyist at heart!". I say, it doesn't matter. You are the artist, and you have to value yourself above anybody else - even the tiniest drawing has it's value, because it was you who made it! And the fact that someone isn't doing art for profit is great, it shows passion - but then again, somebody else profiting from your hard work is not okay, ever.

That being said, try to upload things at 30% of their actual resolution - or even less, depending on the size. Remember that the average user screen size nowadays is about 1024 x 768 px, or 1366 × 768 px, and resize around that.

Another thing I've noticed is that you tend to do everything a little stretched out - I see that even in other deviations you've submitted to this site; and it shows out on this drawing. Everything looks like you made the image small and stretched it out on the canvas - it's more visible on the robot and on the boy this effect. I suggest that you plan out a little bit your composition with shapes, to really simplify your drawing before you start doing stuff. Also, work with a really zoomed out image; that helps loads.

In a last note; I reeeeeeeally love so much your use of color! Love love love the black and white overall with just hints of neon green reflecting everywhere, it's so intense and nice that I might steal this concept someday!
But I'm not really a fan of using those leaf brushes. Like, I understand your idea - you wanted to convey the trees without taking much time, and it worked - it really did! -, but then again, these brushes are so commonplace and I've seen them in so many pieces that I really don't like it when I see them. I suggest you to either look around for different foliage brushes, or make your own, or even make the trees without brush help, like so.

I hope this comment has been helpful - if it wasn't, sorry for the long winded rant!

Hope you have an excellent day and keep on arting! You're awesome!

Well, you have made some very valid points!  I'm not sure why I didn't downsize for the upload, I guess I didn't even think about it with this one, or even putting my sig in there!  Anyway, both have been rectified and thank you for the reminder!

I was a little hesitant to use the leaf brush because it felt a bit impersonal to me, and now you have confirmed my hesitancy.  I will just have to put the time in next time for the leaves myself.

I appreciate your comments about the dimensions of my characters, but for that I will say that it is very intentional on my part as I like for my pictures to kind of have a 'realistic cartoon' feel to them.  It is never my intention for my pictures to have the same dimensions as the source material.  I don't want to downplay your comments though, I've thought in my last pictures that maybe I should add more skew to the proportions to make it more obvious as to my intentions rather than people wondering if it was intentional or not.

Thanks so much for your detailed comment!

yeah, that's a trend i've seen about your artwork. many people won't even think about resizing. and when you do that, you are putting your artwork online for people to use as they wish, and i've seen so much art stolen because of that! always be cautious.

yeah, using premade brushes can make the piece feel quite "not yours". although it works pretty well, when you know how to use them, i think it's better to stick with the handmade route, even if you know how to use this kind of brushes.

and oh, now i understand. it's an interesting choice for style, but yeah - if you want to make sure people will see your work and get that it's supposed to be stylized, you gotta force your proportions to be more extreme. it's a good exercise, in fact!

i am glad that i could be of help!
