How did u learn to draw faces? Just practice or did you study from somewhere? These are great.  I struggle so much with faces... :3

They look fantastic, I will check out the reilly method and focus on the shape.  How detailed do you recommend when studying the shape? Planes of the face level?

thanks for the info it helps a lot

Yeah I would stick to just the planes... like something along these lines
s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/o…

Or look up the asaro head...
I would stick to that level of detail for a while... Ive wasted a lot of time detailing poorly gestured figures and portraits...
There really is no point unless you understand the plains of the face and anatomy....
While working on the planes of the face I would try and apply the anatomy to it accurately too... really from there its just practice till it looks right...
I need to heed my own advise honestly... I get pretty distracted move to the fun stuff... but its the grunt work the makes the difference...

But really the shape... like silhouette of the head... is so important im finding... Spending a lot of time on that before I move onto anything else.

Awesome, I found some videos on the reilly method and started studying it.  Will post my studies as I go.

Yeah I agree!  I was looking around for something similar, but all the similar groups also seem dead.  It would be nice to have a place to share and learn.  You might be right, that it might be worth it for us to set our own study group up.  I love seeing other people's studies and being able to ask them for advice like this.

Also I found it a lot more motivating to study a lot when there was a ladder because I am quite competitive (lol!).

Ive also been toying around with the idea of google hangout groups... You know like where your all sharing your desktop. rather then just one person like on twitch... I think there is a limit of like 10 people per hangout, But a group that met up like that a few times a week and everyone can just draw together and ask questions... maybe take turns highlighting artists... or highlighting what people learned that week. But not necessarily leave it open have a little structure.

Yeah this is a really cool idea, especially if we could find a few artists to join us. I love google hangout, it's really useful for teaching/sharing ideas.

Trying something new with these... trying to rely less on reference... so the head shape and angle where from reference... then I added the features and what now

Yeah I think the head is way harder then figure in general... I'm only now starting to get a finger tip on it... To answer you question, yes practice. But as far as my learning sources, Numbero uno! Reilly method, Need to learn that. Also Learn the head shape... forget about the details of the features for a long time... Just make shapes on the shape of the head.  remember its a 3 dimension object.... Imagine your drawing every head from a horizon line...

I also found this tutorial www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUuYD9… on painting the head, I think it was really useful in pointing out the planes of the head as well, and how they are affected by light.
