The 'Hobbit Box' (Originally entitled 3 Tier Ivy Box, before it was exhibited in early 2006) was an early test piece that actually ended up becoming an item in its own right. It was originally exhibited in Lincoln (UK) before being sold to a gallery in Devon and finally ended up in a Hotel Lobby in Cornwall. If you like my work, why not join my Facebook here [link]

This one is brilliant! I love the shapes, and the way there are some branches growing between the drawers. This is the kind of thing I love most~

In a time when everything is manufactured - it is really refreshing to see a traditional artisan such as you.
Thank you for making such wonderful things!

Thank You so much! I never really understood the phrase 'a labour of love' until I started woodworking, but I do love it and I don't think that I'll ever stop needing to create these things!

Your work is such an inspiration..... it's so rare to see someone invest so much of themselves and their time into a single creation. I would love to own one of your pieces someday

That is amazing.
I love how at first glance the piece, well - It looks useless. "How am I going to open the drawers?" But after a moment, the cute you made poke out and we can see that yes, it really does work.
I come from long line of carpenters (I'm a metalworker, myself) and I had a hard enough time using the belt sander helping out years ago.
Again, amazing!

Hi Bob. Thanks for your comment. This particular box was the first of this type that I did, and for that reason took around 6weeks of part time work (I work on several projects at a time). Now I've got the technique down though, even a more complicated box (Such as my current work in progress) will only take about 4weeks to complete. Cheers!

mhh from my point of view 6 weeks are also quite fast, but im just a hobbyist.
how are you doing the leaves? that must be a hell of a work cause they are many and they are relativly thin.

The leaves, as a rule are carved out of Tulip wood (also known as Poplar) firstly for the gree(ish) colour to the timber, but secondly for its stability and forgivingness. That said the process is still relatively tedious. I try to do the leaves all at once if possible (and if I find time between projects/commisions) and I have a box of 'spare' ones fron past boxes. Each each leaf is about 1/8 Inch thick. I simply take a piece of stock around 2'' thick, and draw loads of 'leaf' shapes on top and cut them out on the bandsaw. I'm then left with leaves (well, leaf shaped blanks) that I then use a scroll saw to cut into the curved sections ready for final hand carving with a mixture of cylinder burr's and sanding drums. One 'blank' will yeald on average 6-8 leaves, and each leaf shape takes 1-2minutes to finnish carving by hand. I hope that rather lengthy discription made sense to you... Thanks bob.
PS. Love your work... I've been promising my partner that I'll make her a trike for a couple of years now & I think if she saw your designs she'd go nuts!

yeah i am shure i understood your explenation. when i was thinkin about how you are doin the leaves i also thought about cuttin the outlines on a bandsaw but the idea of making a stack of leaves and using a scroll saw is as simple as genious.
thx for givin me some advice in woodworkin. iam just at the beginning of my way through the worlds of crafting and case and trike are the first things i build by myself.
