You know this piece of furnitue is too impractical, right?

You have that as a sidetable, sooner or later someone's going to knock into it /tip it over, and then several of those lovely drips are going to snap off, and not always cleanly.

Do another one where the drips are more supported, and I'll say that it's a damn good table...

back2root In reply to Jester-of-the-Clown [2010-02-11 23:17:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your interest in the table... Actually you'd be really surprised! I was exceptionally careful in the design of this piece as I want all my artwork to be functional. Despite only having three legs, I made two of the legs flare considerably to A: look like pools of molten wood & B: spread the weight of the piece over a large surface area (more than 60% of the overall table top area).

Not only that but piece is extremely heavy! I also went to a great effort to make a table that looked delicate but was in fact very sturdy. The thinnest drips are no thinner than 3/8th's. It takes a great deal of force to snap 3/8th Oak! To be even more careful each thin drip is surrounded on all sides by thicker ones - I actually used to 'play' the drips as each one had a different tone! It was dropped and knocked over on many occasions while it was being moved from gallery to gallery without a scratch!

I hope that that puts your worries to rest? Robs

It's a work of art, and art isn't always about practicality

Jester-of-the-Clown In reply to ImAGirlNamedMichael [2010-02-07 18:10:10 +0000 UTC]

Unless I hear this from the artist, I don't give. Furniture is furniture, creatively made or not. It has to be more stable than this. It just has to...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ImAGirlNamedMichael In reply to Jester-of-the-Clown [2010-02-08 20:08:30 +0000 UTC]

How do you know how stable it is? Many side tables are small and have legs that are not wide spread. Unless you see the table in person, you can't make any sort of judgement as to how stable it is. How do you know he didn't weight the feet to offer a lower center of gravity? Oh, and this is an art site, not a furniture site. many art pieces like this are made to be appreciated AS a work of art, not as a piece of furniture in a home.

back2root In reply to Birdee-Blake [2010-02-11 17:51:57 +0000 UTC]

Not at all! I was present at an exhibition in Lincoln (UK) where the table was on display & I'd say 85% of the viewers couldn't resist sneaking a quick touch - I loved it as it was when I realised that it was a success!
