During the second dawn of the space age, weapons like these were the primary means of engaging enemy spaceships. But with the advent of new technologies, in particular the development of stronger alloys and the growing trend of installing thicker armor on new ships, such weapons began to rapidly lose their positions. However, they have not completely disappeared. Instead, they occupied an important niche in anti-missile and, later, anti-fighter defense. The latest developments in this area allowed this system (and a number of others) to also detect, track and destroy approaching large-caliber cannon shells.
