The zoo in Dvůr Králové nad Labem has a population of chimpanzees who all seem to be geriatrics. This one was leaning on the glass wall of the enclosure, apparently pondering the meaning of life, the universe, and bananas.Related content

Sorry about the plight of so many primates, humans included; but we're at fault for most of our own problems...and much of the world's as well.

Well, any species will always thrive best in their natural habitat, no matter how hard and earnestly zoos work to provide them with livable conditions. That's a given. On the other hand, zoos may soon be just about the only places where they can live. Darwin predicted 150 years ago that great apes may become extinct; it doesn't look like it'll even take that long from now to complete the process.
