Мангуп * (Мангуп-Кале, Мангуп-Кермен, Манкуп, Майкоп, Ман-Кермен) — тюркское название средневекового города-крепости, располагавшегося на плато горы Баба-Даг в Бахчисарайском районе Крыма. Укрепление было построено в VI в. византийцами, а службу в нём несли федераты: крымские готы и аланы. Это место упоминается в византийских источниках того времени как Дори или Дорос, центр Крымской Готии. На рубеже VIII—IХ вв. наступает период упадка, вызванный хазарским завоеванием . В ХIV—ХV вв. Дорос возрождается и расцветает как столица православного княжества Феодоро — северного форпоста Византийской империи . В ХV в. при князе Алексее окончательно формируются три линии обороны города, заново возводится большая базилика и дворец, реконструируется цитадель. В 1475 г. после изнурительной шестимесячной осады столица Феодоро была завоёвана турками и вошла в состав крымских владений Османской империи . Потерявший стратегическое значение Дорос-Мангуп заселяется — как и Чуфут-Кале — караимами . В конце XVIII в. последние жители покидают Мангуп и переселяются в долину. В начале 2000-х в древних пещерах-кельях на южном краю плато возрождён Свято-Благовещенский пещерный мужской монастырь .

Mangup * (a.k.a. Mangup-Kale, Mangup-Kermen, Mankup, Maikop, Man-Kermen) is the Turkic name of the medieval fortress/town on the upper plateau of the mountain Baba-Dag in the Bakhchysarai Raion of the Republic of Crimea , Russia. The fortification was built in the VI c. by the Byzantines and served in by their allies: the Crimean Goths and Alans . The byzantine sources of the time mention the place as Dori or Doros, the center of the Crimean Gothia. At the turn of the VIII—IХ cc., the conquest of Crimea by the Khazars brings about a period of decline. In ХIV—ХV cc. Doros is once again on the rise as the capital of the Orthodox Christian Principality of Theodoro —the northernmost outpost of the Byzantine Empire . In the XV c., Prince Alexis finalizes the construction of the three defense lines, a large basilica church and a palace, and modernizes the citadel. In 1475, following an exhausting 6-month-long siege, the capital of Theodoro is conquered by the Turkish army and incorporated in the Crimean vilayet of the Ottoman Empire . Having lost its strategic importance, the abandoned cave town of Doros-Mangup—together with Chufut-Kale —is occupied by the Crimean Karaite community. Toward the end of the XVIII c., the last Mangup residents leave their town at the mountaintop and resettle in the valley. In the early 2000s, a group of Russian Orthodox monks revive the Holy Annunciation Cave Monastery in the ancient monk cells in the cliffs at the southern edge of the plateau.
