Чуфут-Кале. Вот как описали это удивительное место и его обитателей два британских журналиста начала 19 века — Сэр Джон Боуринг и Джон Стюарт Милл — в журнале «The London and Westminster Review» (том 5/27, 1837):

«Иудеи-караимы, отделившиеся от своего народа ещё до пришествия Иисуса Христа, первыми привлекли внимание нашего путешественника. Помимо фанатичной враждебности мусульман, караимам приходилось терпеть ещё бóльшее неприятие со стороны своих братьев по вере, которых бесил тот факт, что караимы отвергают Талмуд. Группа этих «сепаратистов» заняла селение Чуфут-Кале, которое располагалось в одной лиге* от строившегося города Бахчисарая; там они свободно исповедуют свою религию, не навлекая гнева соседних общин, с которыми прежде приходилось жить бок о бок. Чтобы помнить о своём происхождении и о стране, из которой они были изгнаны гневом Божьим, караимы выбрали участок земли и назвали его Иосафатовой долиной. Она стоит под сенью очень красивых деревьев, и хотя похороненным здесь нет от того никакой пользы, живые приходят сюда, дабы отдохнуть, поразмышлять и помолиться о тех, кого они любили».

«The Karaite Jews, who separated from the great body of the nation before the coming of Jesus Christ, were the first who engaged the attention of our traveller. In addition to the fanatical enmity of the Mussulmans, the Karaites had to endure more ferocious hostility from their own brethren, whom their rejection of the Talmud and the whole body of traditions infuriated. A body of these separatists occupies the village of Chufut Kalé, situated about a league from the rising town of Bakhchysarai; and there they practise in freedom all the ceremonies which used to provoke the wrath of their neighbors when they were mingled with other communities. To recall their origin, and to nourish memory of the country from which they been driven by divine wrath, they have chosen a plot of ground near their village, which they have named the Valley of Josaphat. It is shaded by very beautiful trees, and though the dead derive no advantage from this, the shades invite the living to repose, to meditate and to pray for those whom they loved».
