Description
This was an older project. It's a 28mm figure from Warhammer. I painted the figure in acrylics and the base was scratch built. I thought it fit the mood of the figure.Related content

I love this model - even though I usually don't dig such creepy armies, I have to admit that the atmosphere is generates is excellent. The way they omitted the clear flying model rods makes it feel like it's really floating.

The base is mostly cork (Ikea sells some nice thick pieces as trivets). If you pull it apart (don't cut) it gives you a great texture you see above. I stacked a number of pieces to form the shape I wanted and glued on little bits to fill the gaps. For small holes and seams between pieces I dabbed on white glue and then sprinkled it with sand. I primed it black and then hit it with a white primer from above. With it pre-shaded, I layered washes (mostly black and brown, but some blues and purples too) to get the color I wanted. The top was a rock and a twig, then snow effects and field grass from Woodland Scenics. Oh, and a little bit of water effects down the side as snow melt.
I did mostly the same thing for the white speaker base, just with more twigs and no snow (plus some plaster columns and tiles).
