That was so lame of Freddy vs Jason, I mean had it been a specific "drowning" with him as a kid, sure. But it was just the water. he literally walks in and out of the lake...even in the SAME movie.
Jason was so overpowered relative to Freddy *which sadly when you think about it Freddy would lose to most any other horror monster even on his own turf* that they had to make up a weakness to give Freddy the edge.

I've seen four Jason movies and even I know that.

one of which had to be Freddy vs Jason, as he literally doesn't have this fear in any other movie. He in fact attacks people FROM the lake, like jump out of it like a dolphin to get you. Walks through it to get people *his real short cut before that remake made him a human gopher apparently*.

is he? I mean until the sixth movie he was human, in the sixth he is rained on and it only helps him, he gets anchored to the bottom of the lake but also gets a propeller to his face....maybe not being able to break free kind of feels that way but its not explicit. the seventh he was dragged into the lake and tied up or so, but that was a psychic nightmare manifestation defeat.
I mean in the eighth movie he pretty much walked/swam through the ocean and (somehow) tracked the few survivors of his cruise ship assault.
beyond those his interactions with the lake seem less a burden and he never hesitates to get near the water.

I dunno. I mean....how do you survive an axe to the head. I figured he was a zombie kinda thing since at least the third movie.
But yeah. I guess. Like I said, haven't seen all of them.

yeah...its weird. But he was supposed to be human, and killed off in the fourth movie.
Okay, break down.
1st: Jason drowned, and his mother was killing councilors for decades since it happened. She is killed.
2nd: Jason...didn't drown, he had been hanging out in the woods...without ever alerting his mother he was alive, and saw her killed (this messed up the premise of the first so bad that several people who worked on the first movie refused to come back to the series)
3rd: Jason is still human technically, just really tough, he can be fought off, injured, and in this movie he dawns the Hockey Mask...and this one was supposed to have killed him at the end. I mean yeah, axe to the head.
4th: Jason's deformed cranium apparently allowed him to survive, comes back; and his killed by a kid wailing on him with an axe...and here things get awkward.
5th: Jason is dead, the kid is now a "teenager"...older actors playing teens...poorly, and has psychosis problems. Someone is copycatting Jason and it might be him...its not. But this one ends...implying that he does go insane and kills someone...and is supposed to be the new killer going forward.
6th: Okay, ignore the ending of the previous movie, as he isn't a killer, and instead as an adult digs up Jason's grave (although the previous movie stated Jason had been cremated...guess not), and lightning and such and Jason is now a zombie...just is, no black magic or anything (comic book series later ended up explaining this). Ends with a desperate attempt to chain Jason to a weight in the lake and a propeller to the face.
7th: Uh...psychokinetic girl accidently frees Jason because she...mistook his zombie undead soul for that of her father whom she killed as a little girl because he was an abusive asshole...this plot never tries to make sense; but we do see a not really in control of her powers psionic try to fight off Jason and Jason keeps surviving worse stuff; until at the end she DOES summon her water logged zombie dad to drag Jason back to the bottom of the lake...and apparently chain him back up like the end of part 6 given the next movie.
8th: electrical cable with no business being at the bottom of a rural lake is hit by an anchor, and just happens to be near Jason, revives him again, climbs aboard cruise ship, because apparently Crystal lake has an outlit to the Atlantic Ocean, and makes his way to New York City; ignores anyone not directly between him and survivors from cruise ship...oh also there are like two Jasons, one's a ghost I think or the girl is just crazy; and at the end Jason is killed/turned into a small child and killed by toxic sludge because apparently in this universe New York floods the very large sewer tunnels it has with toxic sludge at midnight every night.
9th: totally ignores every single movie before it, Jason is now a demon from the Necronomicon, possesses people, and has living relatives he never had till now. This is what happens when you bring back the director from the first movie (they even bragged about it)...who hated every single other movie, and especially Jason being the killer and never bothered (his own words) to watch any of them past the 2nd; so just made stuff up, and Jason proper is barely in the movie; and it makes up rules as it goes.
Freddy vs Jason: Freddy calls Jason to life, Freddy immediately regrets it for reasons that should have been obvious *big real world killer gets all the credit and kills people faster than Freddy does*. They fight, Jason wins; sorry Freddy fans who say "he didn't lose" but even if you (survive) having the other guy walking around with your decapitated head counts as losing.
10: Jason is now a regenerating mutant like Wolverine, gets frozen, ends up in badly done future, turns into a cyborg *Uber Jason*, and is killed by atmospheric friction falling to Earth 2.
Reboot: he's human again, because...we can't think of any way to continue from WTH happened back there? LoL

So...are we counting the 4th film as the real death of Jason...?

yeah that was the end; heck they even named the movie (Final Chapter), and the one with the copycat and intended to make "Tommy" (if I am remembering his name right) the new killer was (A New Beginning).
it was 6 where they just shrugged as by that time supernatural slasher movies were the in thing so went in that direction instead.
If we wanted to divide them up in a way that makes sense.
1 (stand alone)
The Jason serial killer saga (2-5)
The Undead Killer (6-8)
and everything since has been stand alones as far as comprehensive stories go. Its just like Nightmare on Elm Street where some fans advise watching certain movies as their own saga and ignoring or regarding others in the franchise as alternate timelines.

that works too, 5 is kind of a take it or hate it (never knew anyone that really liked it). Most issues with 1 not being stand alone stem from the issues I stated about why the director left the series; as the 2nd movie kind of throws a weird wrench in the plot of the first movie. I recommend Decker Shado (youtube reviewer)'s reviews of the Friday the 13th series, pretty good overview of the flaws and what worked.
