well fast birds are largely predatory animals, so it would serve that the amount of energy necessary for such speed would be found in meat (at least I would assume, given my limited knowledge of the biology of the animal kingdom)

Most "beef" in the markets is actually horse meat. Also, most pepperoni and jerky is made of horse meat or poopy (donley meat.)

From my understanding, since the original V series from the 80's, cannibalism is the eating of sentient/aware beings. If it can talk, if it realizes its life is in danger and can directly communicate not wanting to die - beg for its life - then its cannibalism.
So don't eat any talking plants, unless they ask.

If I remember correctly, horses can eat meat. It's not the best for them, but they can digest it. In fact, horseman in more northern countries often fed their horses meat to make them bulk up. So for Twilight it's just a matter of morality. ^^
