Description
digital paint / Mar 2015The long-lived Dunewalkers puncture the surface of the desert floor with their long, hollow legs, siphoning off large reservoirs of massive sub-surface insect swarms. By controlling the release of it's hot digestive gases, the Dunewalker maintains its buoyancy, counterbalancing its enormous weight like a hot-air balloon. Bacterial colonies feed upon these nutrient rich gas clouds and attract airborne insects, who are then consumed by Flocks of desert birds whose droppings in turn attract the sub-surface swarms, completing this ancient symbiotic cycle of the wastes.

Would the buoyancy of the animal itself make it subject to winds? Maybe there are migratory patterns where it can just be carried by currents in huge packs, or are they too heavy for that?Β

The sand itself probably acts as an anchor, depending on how far down the legs go. Considering all the bits and bobs and giant hairs sticking out of them, they seem be intended to generate a good deal of friction.
I imagine it would walk by moving one leg at a time, to maximize the friction they generate. I can also imagine it letting off more gas than usual in the event of strong wind, both to increase its weight and sink into the sand more.

Reading the description of this creature and it's role in this ecosystem really solidifies the context of this piece. If this concept is not part of a story, it really should be! Amazing art and concept!!
