Description 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide
Slightly larger than life size

- Charcoal/Sanguine, with Photoshop filters

This model gave a nice triangle composition pose.
I got lucky from my angle....

...by the way, what's up with people who complain about the pose when all they draw is the face? Half the class wanted her to drop her arm and straighten her torso, then they spend the rest of the time drawing nostrils and eye lids....
...seriously, this woman could have been giving birth to an elephant and the only thing these people would have drawn would be a furrowed brow...

This is amazing! Everything works. She looks like she's going to burst. I especially like how her head is in the dark. You are the god of lifedrawing.

I'm taking a lifedrawing class and I'm a little disappointed when we get a skinny model. She looks like she was a lot of fun to draw.

Yeah this model, her name is Pat. She's really great.
She's got a lot of personality with her poses.
She works in the Toronto area...so if you're ever
in the area you can go check her out.

I personally enjoy drawing people of all sizes.
However I tend to have some difficulties with skinny
women...as I enjoy drawing volume and muscle, and skinny
women usually have neither...haha

This is just stunning! The way you've painted it is just fantastic- there's so much form to it. The red colours also give a warmth to it. Beautiful work!

...it's not a painting though...haha

Oh dear, people can get so self-important sometimes. I'm sure none of them did anything as good as this though.

She is somehow threatening, being faceless, and through the raw, visceral way you've captured her.

thanks...it's been a while since I looked at this piece.
I always seem to hate them after a long period...
I'm glad you noticed that about the face. It's a something
I do often for that very reason...

Forgive the language, but Jesus Christ, you are amazing.

It's true that people shouldn't complain about anything that will lead them to hypocrisy, but I suppose there's nothing to do but to tune them out. Perhaps they are just too uncomfortable with the prospect of drawing the human form as it actually appears, so they end up focusing on the face since its familiar and less threatening than say her legs or breasts. Or they are just so convinced at their skill at drawing portraits, that they won't challenge themselves by attempting the rest. Either way, they shouldn't try to control one aspect when it won't affect the finished piece, as you said.
I miss life drawing, but such examples of behavior remind me that I don't miss class.
Well done, sir, and keep up the good work. Don't let the naysayers get you down.

I really enjoy the life drawing environment..

In the end it's always worth going.

...all of my large figure drawings are this size.
I can't take credit for the composition.
It was all due to the model's great pose.

i fucking hated my art classes for that. details LATER, work on everything else FIRST

didn't we learn the concept of "general to specific" in ART101?!

Nice work there though, c: you captured the essence of what te excersize is all about right there

Ballistyc In reply to neurotikitten [2010-03-11 16:22:30 +0000 UTC]

I agree with everything you said, but
that wasn't really my point....haha
My point was I really dislike people who come to class knowing that they will only draw a portrait yet the still insist on giving their suggestions on how the model should pose the rest of their body. It's perfectly cool that they want to draw portraits, but they should keep their opinions on posing to themselves. It's inconsiderate..

thanks!

I love how you express through the body. Even more love how you use your mediums. But I cant help but desire to watch you doing a piece, and consume all your techniques and art styles.

Good job. And hey most people in a life class aint considering the real art...more photo realism. Or so i've noticed from my participation in such things.

Ballistyc In reply to Sworlordmelta [2010-03-11 16:13:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh thank you. I'm quite boring to watch though...
...people stop watching me once I start trying
to pick up the charcoal with my anus..

...it always ends up going in before I even touch the paper...
**insert awkward silence**

...by the way....what's real art?
I'm not trying to put you on the spot,
but I have no idea what that means...haha

Sworlordmelta In reply to Ballistyc [2010-03-12 12:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Seriously though, im just that sort of sick puppy to enjoy you digesting charcoal

Real art...well i've always been of the belief that art is in fact perceived by its audience and not by the artist. And if i was to describe it, art would be the reflection of something (emotion, pressence, self, form, ideals, etc) that is not bound by techniques but are clearly used. Are not strictly formal in function but deliver everything and nothing all at once....

or in fact it could just be that pretty picture.

Either way...i like my art with a hint of spite, disgust and pure artist arrogance...

How long did you spend on this Chuck?
Really love the pose...
Great feel and texture...
Excellent work as always my friend..
Ps. where's the face?...just kidding...sorry

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ballistyc In reply to RandyHand [2010-03-11 16:00:57 +0000 UTC]

**does a face plant**

...haha
I don't mind faces, or people who focus on drawing portraits,
I just don't like when people nitpick and complain about things that
don't affect them....it almost reminds me of the who 'Gay Marriage' topics..
...oy...

...but to answer you question,
it probably took about 10 minutes to draw the major forms, and get down the
composition, and then about 2-3 hours to pick at the details and define the forms.
...but what you see now is basically how it looked around the 30 minute mark,
even though I took about 3 hours...haha

thanks for the favourite, my friend!
