This one was a lot of fun. And I’m glad it was too because I needed this little ‘win’ to cheer myself up. My intention today wasn’t to draw this picture, I actually started off with an entirely different character, got it to the finished inks stage and then scrapped it as it didn’t look how I wanted. And in all honesty, neither did this one to start with but a little perseverance certainly paid off.

So I’m obviously on a bit of an Argo Comics fan art run after finishing up an issue of Sorority of Power for them and this is kind of my way of doing a little promotion in the run up to the issue being released. I haven’t drawn some of these characters before and I’m just putting my spin on some of the existing designs, which is kinda fun.

This character is Quantama. She is an Android created by the Soviet Union who later gains consciousness. Her power is the ability to dissolve inorganic matter. I haven’t veered away from the original design at all, just given it my twist. With her being a machine I was originally intending to make her very robotic but decided that the simpler, more feminine appearance just worked better. I was then going to plaster her in Soviet symbology but then realised its not likely the most discreet option when sending your military weapon into battle!😂 People are very soon going to know who the responsible party is if she’s covered in red stars and hammers and sickles! 😂 So, although a little on the ‘Silver Surfer’ side of things, I thought if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Instead, I just made tiny changes. I gave her eyes and her disintegration powers a green glow, harkening back to her surviving the nuclear explosion which brought about her self awareness.

But I so wanted to use some USSR iconography that I thought I could sneak it in somewhere else. No opportunity is going to provide itself better than having a Russian Superhero with a ‘Q’ as their initial AND the coincidence that the old Soviet hammer and sickle looks like a Q! Meant to be! 😂😂😂
