At first, I didn't think it made any sense. Hilbert was a name for a hick. A down-home, iced-tea-sippin, corn-growin' hick.
Then I thought about it. He's from Nuvema town. Nuvema is a small town, and it is a farming community. (Large crop fields line the road of Route 1) In all likelihood, he did grow up caring for crops. He probably was a farm boy. Now his name makes more sense.
Still not a good name, but at least it makes sense.
