Thanks unexistingknight, its all explained in previous replies,on page 1 and page 2,i explain the symbolism, she's called the Healer for a real reason and that is because I have health issues and i created her as a positive energy in physical form, you could say a guardian/talisman to connect with.

That is a pratty impressive work man!
I suggest you to explain to your audience the deeper meaning of the symbolics you represent in your sculptures!
Clearly your works are already highly artistic concerning the tecnical aspects, but it's the symbolism that makes them so powerfull and remarkable!
Of course that is in my opinion
Warmest wishes!

Some they are from dreams or sometimes in patterns, stains and stones and sometimes if I'm not sculpting I think about sculpting and can get inspired by just thinking I'm sculpting, but it's all in my head, and the internal dialogue I'll have while doing this like if I put this here and put the arms there cut out a triangle, place the arms there, well that's what I did for the Healer before I even got round to sculpting her,she was already plotted out, without having to sketch anything.

Interested in your thoughts on the Monster clay vs. Chavant issue.
I started with Monster Clay but have recently moved to Chavant since it is sort of the industry standard. I was also having a hard time smoothing Monster Clay with 99% alcohol, a problem I don't seem to have with Chavant. Also used Mineral Spirits today with good results. What is your preferred solvent with Chavant? With Monster Clay? You seem to be getting very smooth results. Have you noticed a difference with smoothing the Monster Clay?
The Chavant also just seems to cut smoother without crumbly edges. Maybe i'm imagining that. I haven't gone back to a full sculpt in Monster Clay yet, so maybe I have just adapted. Chavant is for sure much stickier...not sure if I love that yet.
I do love the ability to melt and pour Monster Clay into molds. I will keep doing that for sure. Not sure if Chavant can handle that kind of liquidation.
So, what do you think? Have you dug in enough to have pros and cons, yet? Very curious to hear your thoughts.
Loving your style and design choices. Are these pieces destined for molding/casting?
Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Markus

Hi Markus,
I know what you mean,I do like chavant but it's annoying sometimes when it sticks to your tool when your intention is to get it to stick onto the clay, you have to keep dabbing away till it leaves the tool and also it cloggs up your tools, that's why I thought I'd try monster clay for the first time.
I'm loving monster clay at the moment because you have more control and it hardens unlike chavant so no more accidental smudging or knocks to damage your sculpt, and you can get more refined details, sharper edges,I liken it to using a wax and a clay at the same time.
About smoothing, well I use lighter fluid for chavant I get good results with that,I did try it on monster clay and it didn't have the same result so i'm not sure at the moment what to use to smooth it out,I might have to ask around read up on the best results for smoothing out monster clay.
Yes hopefully everything I sculpt on here will go through the moulding and painting process, that's why my work isn't too crazy,it's crazy in a way but controlled, because I have to find away to mould the sucker without locking the moulds and I don't want to make complicated moulds,so I tend to sculpt things that I can mould as a two piece mould.
If I was to sculpt something and know I wouldn't have to mould it then I'd be scuplting crazy style, lol.
Thanks

ah, I was gonna make a guess and was going to say 12-15 inches...

And there's always that issue whenever you start with a medium you've not had much experience with. (that is, the monster clay) You just start to realize, "wow, I had a really hard time with project x that would have been much better/easier if I had used medium y... Oh well, Just gotta roll with the punches for now~!"

The same thing happened to me, in a sense when I started to paint minifigures last week. I had a pewter one that I absolutely adored but just cost too much money, so I found a few in plastic... Ugh. It's... I regret the "saved" 3 dollars that I then had to put towards a new pewter sculpt.

Well, I look at this as a piece one would find at a shrine. It is an homage to a goddess of some sort of alien race, it seems. A piece seems to be missing from the chest, however, it doesn't appear to be the same piece present in the bottom set of hands, mostly due to the belly button present therein.

Thinking of this using classic symbolism, I find the shape of the hole and piece to be somewhat odd, in a sense. A upward-facing triangle, such as the ones present in the image, normally denote a male influence, meaning war, conquest and power being the prime features of the image. However, in contrast, the downward-facing triangle is often associated with women, covering love, hope and, most importantly, healing/nurturing/life. Because of this, I feel a much more poignant image might have been one of a removed chest piece remaining the same with the lower piece being somehow directly indicated as being said missing piece, rotated so that the triangle pointed down to indicate a being which removed a piece of male identity, the Yin, so to speak, to enhance their feminine/healing dominion, that is, to sacrifice the Yin for the Yang.

Of course, this is assuming we look at the image based on said symbology.

eeeeeeh.... I forgot to mention the middle fists, which I find are a rather nice touch. According to what I have recently heard (and may have recently misinterpreted, so bear with me) that hand gesture is given before martial arts battles, a closed fist overlain with a cupped hand. When the left hand covers the right, the indication is of a friendly/civilized bout, whereas the right over left would indicate a fight that would only end with the death or utter destruction of the opponent.

Your being seems to have the former sentiment expressed, further driving home the point of a peaceful being.

Hi Sashikinaroji,
Thanks for your interest in this sculpt, your right there is meanings in this sculpt, some being from a personal point of view hence the name 'The healer',it concerns my health and well being.
About the symbolism there are a few but not of the earthly realm, the triangle represented in this being are spiritual gateways for transmutation, also the triangle is formed in the negative space within this sculpt, there are 3 triangles in this sculpt and the 3 triangles represent the holy trinity united in a single god head,it can also represent a ritual a summoning symbol.
The hole in the triangle is a wound from her chest that she is healing
The middle pair of hands that are in a fist will represent ying and yang which you will see when i come to painting her,one will be black and the other white.
The base she is kneeling on will be an ornate carpet and I'm currently sculpting 2 swans that will be added to the base they are symbolic of divine energy, she is all in all a positive force and hopefully a healing force for anyone who connects with it.
Thought i'd give you some insight into the piece, your right about your symbolism, there's just so many meanings that can be interpreted to this piece that needed clarifying.
Thank you for taking your time writing about her though i really appreciate the thought,it is always very interesting to hear what other people think.

That's why I love symbolism, though. I have a friend who is very deep into it (I more or less dabble) and we have had many discussions on it, but the conversation always comes back to the same final talking point: does the intention matter?

It's one of those things you see where people will ascribe meaning to a piece based on their own individual opinions and beliefs, sometimes even directly opposing what the artist intended, other times giving meaning to something that was a simple line that "sounded good" (in the case of the written word) and because of that, I feel it's always nice to give your own thoughts on such matters.

The way I figure it, seeing what other people think your work represents is far more rewarding than just hearing how nicely it turned out.

barbelith2000ad In reply to GarnetGrinstead [2012-08-22 15:00:02 +0000 UTC]

I agree I love what other people see and connect with and their thoughts about it too,it can expand a piece of work through other peoples thoughts and ideas, sometimes the artist can see the piece in a new light to his own driven personal thoughts.
Its all relative,I'm happy when people connect with something i've made and take some time out of their lives to write something about it.

The hole in the chest drew my eye first and made me feel slightly out of breath (which doesn't ever really happen to me - pieces of art soliciting physical reactions, I mean). Such a strong initial reaction made me focus a lot more on the details than I normally might have. I feel like I understand this sculpture on some subconscious level. Very cool over all ^_^
