Heart-wrenching. To think people actually have to do this EVERYDAY in order to get by.... It really makes us think how easy we have it....... It's admirable though that they're able to get up, get ready, go to work, pick through trash all day, come home, eat dinner, go to sleep, wake up, start again.

in this case its a little different.
you must remember that they don't really go home. their houses are right there.

Oh yes, I totally understand that! It's just also sad that there houses are right by it, so they can never get away from it.

Fantastic photo.

The gases being emitted by this dump could no doubt power a city, so try to look past the obvious and see the hidden possibilities of human ingenuity. If you think you know something about dumps and landfills and their effects on the environment I highly recommend this article, it clears up a lot of common myths: [link]

I'm not ashamed to admit I take things out of the dump, I ran my truck on dump sourced tires for years!

The bright colors sporadically appearing throughout the trash makes this scene almost fun, but greatly contrasts with the sad content of this picture. Excellent work! The best pictures are those that speak to the viewer, and this has definitely tugged at my heart strings.

I agree!
When I first looked at this photo, with a small thumbnail, I thought that this garbage dump was a flood of toys.

Yeah I know! I thought this was a 'leftover Christmas Toys/decorations dump' from the thumbnail XD

This is a very nice photo. Though it is heartbreaking to see that is what has become of the environment. Those tires could be recycled, and there are pop cans and water bottles in there. Those are able to be recycled too. It's just.... so sad...

Thank you for this. Everyone is always teasing me because I'm constantly ranting and raving about the poor all around the world and the situation they're in. They just don't understand! How can you look at this an not be moved to pity? I live in the United States and this sort of thing just doesn't happen here. It is ridiculous how insanely fortunate we are. And no one seems to care.

What stands out to me is just how colourful the garbage is. All those plastic bags need to be fancy and pretty while we use them for, what, an hour or two? And the rotten, stinky, go-back-to-the-earth garbage juxtaposed with the pretty, colourful, last-a-thousand-years garbage. It's terrible that these folks have to work in such a dangerous place as a dump, but I like the spirit that at least someone is making use of some of the waste.

To make this picture more tragic you should try to saturate the colours to make it kind of sad

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

krokoflaf In reply to fellenwort [2010-11-12 05:30:24 +0000 UTC]

No, it's just an extremely tiny landfill that takes up almost no space. It's really not that much of a tragedy, some people just pretend it is because it lets them act like they're nicer people than they really are.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fellenwort In reply to krokoflaf [2010-11-12 05:36:38 +0000 UTC]

krokoflaf In reply to fellenwort [2010-11-12 06:16:07 +0000 UTC]

Which part of what I said implied that? Definitely not the part about the landfill being tiny, because it is, I've been to landfills 10 times bigger, they're all over America, Canada, South America, Mexico, wherever. If you want to know what landfills are really like, you should look up the Penn and Teller: Bullshit episode about recycling.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

BarceloDan In reply to krokoflaf [2010-11-12 11:08:08 +0000 UTC]

I guess you are both right.
I would say that the main different between a landfill in the west and the one we see here.
is the the huge one that that you speak about, are usually far from all settlements and are very well monitored. the people who work there usually do it from the convenience of an air conditioned tractor.
wail what we see here, is definitely not a small landfill (its right outside he capital city) and the people that you see, live in the houses right at the edge of the hill. and for lack of an other option they bring their kids with them.
the place is constantly covered in smoke from the plastic burning that go's on, and I'm guessing that their yearly salary is less then what an american makes in one day.

some maybe you don't have to be sad.
but at list don't act as if its O.k.

You said it like you knew for a fact how big the landfill was.

I don't think the point of the picture is that the one landfill is the only problem.
