A retake on with slightly more creative processing in the darkroom (ok, in Gimp). Which do you prefer?Related content

lol thanks? All three versions of the photo were processed with gimp, and the photo itself was taken at a gimp developersβ meetup

I like the brightness of the new one but the former is easier to resolve visually and, probably, more realistic.
The more abstract nature of the brighter one, though, seems to enhance the three-dimensional effect.Β The crop seems to push the nearest column forwards.

Yes, i was deliberately trying to enhance the depth with the crop. Thanks!

The original; I like the crop, colors and lightness of this one better, but those weird little gleaming flares off the corners distract from the details.

Thank you; iβm torn, of course, as i do like the glowing effect, but the flares are things photography courses say are evil

Do they? Why is that?

Lens flares most often happen by mistake, when youβre not using a lens hood, so i think they are seen as a sign of a beginner. Thereβs times when they work just fine, though.

Ah. These ones look clearly fake, though, so I was thinking more in terms of the graphic editing.

Yeah, they are of course added. I should probably have left them much more subtle; i changed my mind at the last moment. Should not post when tired Thanks!

I thought they were added on purpose for an aesthetic reason (it kind of makes it look like the stone is gleaming).

Yes, they were in this case added for exactly that reason, but judging by the reactions in the comments i probably overdid them. The layer is only i think 30% opaque as it is

I personally prefer the darker image, but this one is beautiful too~ You've a good eye for composition, and it's hard to go wrong with this kind of beautiful architecture!
