Sky’s hooves soared into the air, pulling up dirt and turf as he leapt over the big wooden oxer, letting out a snort of happiness as he landed on the other side with a ‘thud’. His mane was whipped back into his rider’s face – a man, nearly 30, with pale brown hair mixed with blue, red, and purple; a magenta stud protruding through the side of his lip. Kalib was wearing his usual puffy white shirt, which was windswept back, kept in place only by the black waistcoat he wore over it. His dark green jodhpurs were soaked with sweat on the inside, and his legs pulled up nervously as he struggled against the feeling of danger due to a lack of not only stirrups, but a saddle too!
Sky, however, didn’t notice the difference. His amber coat shone like a penny as his muscles rippled and he whinnied out, rushing forward at a gallop and clearing the wooden log, charging towards the bank. Kalib hung on for dear life, feeling his fingers slip on the sweat-slick reins, and suddenly regretting signing up for such an event on such a highly-strung horse.
“Ooooh shi–” he began as the stallion plunged down the drop of the bank and leapt forward, jarring Kalib who smashed into the horse’s neck, only to have himself almost thrown right off as Sky bucked and then charged on ahead, quite out of control, but luckily heading towards the right jump.
Sky whinnied as he leapt a brush fence, then a skinny, and then one made out of what looked like his own field’s fence –which wouldn’t bode well when he realized he could easily jump it– and took it with ease. Kalib still struggled for his seat, but had moved so he was perched on the Thoroughbred’s withers, leaning down onto his neck, keeping contact with his skin at all times, and his hands close to his mane to hold on.
Skylark, however, had no idea of Kalib’s struggle, and was enjoying every single second of the course.
He was truly in his element out in the fields with the logs and the creeks and the banks.
