Description
SHADES OF LOVEFid was feeling angry. She had been dancing or whatever Fid felt passed for dancing for about an hour. Joel was merrily strumming his guitar. He didn’t seem in the least bit tired or phased. Silage was grumpily collecting money from the tiny crowd which had assembled - all to a person (about 7 of them) paying for them to go away.
Another reason Silage was annoyed was because Fid refused point blank to let him play his bongos. They were hollow so he was collecting the meagre proceeds in the upside down drums. Well, seven coppers would pay for a modest meal for the three of them.
Another thing that irked Silage was how Joel was looking at Fid. A look that said I want to be more than friends with this chick! A look of utter adoration. Fid, bless her naïve little heart was utterly oblivious.
He admitted to himself grumpily that she did look lovely with her flouncing pink skirt which billowed as she danced. She also had gold hoops in her ears and her hair was tied with a bright pink scarf. Pity she had no rhythm with that tambourine. And why was she happy to let Joel, a wandering minstrel who’d frightened creatures in Grimwood Forest with his playing, accompany her? Bloody preferences! And prejudice probably. People could be a little funny about dwarves, bloody bigots!
In the little niche, they’d found, Fid grumpily tossed down the tambourine.
“I refuse to conform to this stereotype anymore!”
“Oh, chill out, Fid, babe. We’re doing well!”
Fid slumped down.
“Well, we might have done if that man hadn’t offered to buy me!”
This was true. Fid was incensed to think that she was worth just twenty dollar pounds.
“You’re not for sale!” Joel said.
“Too true!” Fid snapped.
There was a moment’s pause. Fid looked at Joel. He looked hurt at being shouted at. Well, as far as she could see behind those stupid shades he always wore. Fid changed tack:
“Joel, why do you always wear shades? Are you blind? No! Are you hiding something? Is there something wrong with your eyes?”
“No, Fid, babe”
“Don’t call me babe! Tell me why, please?”
“I just wanna look cool!”
Fid sighed inwardly:
“Well, I think it’s silly to wear shades ALL the time!”
Joel fiddled nervously with his shades. He didn’t say anything.
“Take them off!”
“What? In front of a lady?!”
“Go on!”
Joel’s heart melted as he looked into those melting dark brown eyes, even darker behind his shades, but he stood his ground.
“Sorry, Fid, no can do!”
Fid sighed and made to walk away,
Then quick as a whip, she had the shades in her hands. She made to run away but Joel grabbed her arm and turned her to face him.
He thought she was beautiful. He wanted her....badly!
There was something strange but very pleasant about Joel’s eyes. They were a luminous green.
“Wow…..” Fid began but Joel pressed his lips firmly against hers.
The kiss seemed to last an eternity but Fid didn’t mind. Her first kiss was magical and it felt……right.
When the kiss ended, Fid pulled him back for another one.
In the distance, Rosewood, Joel’s guitar twanged to herself mournfully.
Silage, watching them, wiped a tear from his eye. It was over for him and Joel as travelling buddies. Love had gotten in the way.
