Description This is a revision to the bomber design I posted a couple of days ago Bomber design for game 01 .  The client had like the overall concept but wanted me to dial back the streamlining a bit. With this in mind I did this sketch this morning before heading off to work.

There were several things I decided to tweak with the overall design. First, I changed the curved panes of glass in the canopy and replaced them with flat panes, this also had the added effect of the bomber that late 1930's early 40's feel when aircraft like the Bristol Blenheim MKI, the Junker 88 and the Dornier D-17 were in service.

Second, I ditched the streamline engine intakes and replaced them with more blunt designs. These also are more like some of the design elements found on many of the aircraft in the game Crimson Skies.

Third I dispensed with the super sleek, sculpted pods for the rear landing gear and went with something more C-130 like in appearance.

The client is very happy with this design now.

I just love the design on the air intakes on the engines. They look as complex as they're functional, to put it bluntly.

The previously posted design could be re-used as a later development or refinement of what would then be an older model.

True enough but it won't be used for the cover of the current rule book.

Well we are trying to capture that diesel punk quality in the game.

Wait...no tail?

It is a canard design. The elevator is in front of the wing and tail fins or rudder/s are in this case mounted out on the wings.

This plane goes against the laws of natural planes D:

Well remember the Wright flyer of Kitty Hawk was a canard to. So were several of the first designs in the first days of aviation and there are certain benefits to the canard design.

Question. Why is it called canard? That's a duck, if I am not mistaken.

Well I just did some research since I didn't know the answer right away. Apparently the name for this style link of aircraft came from when the French public first saw the Santos-Dumont 14-bis link

I am amazed people managed to see a duck there XD

Thanks for answering. Now that I look at the pictures, I see some more familiar planes. I've seen a lot of jet fighters with that sort of shape.

There were a couple fighter designs during WWII that played with the concept but didn't go into production. The US. Curtiss XP-55 Ascender and the Japanese Kawanishi J7W Shinden being two canard designs from that period.

One of the biggest problems these designs from this period had was addressing how a pilot would bailout of one of these pusher canards and not turn into chum because of the prop at the back of the plane. Ejection seats would definitely be advised, although as the speed of aircraft continued to increase throughout the war ejection seats were just an idea whose time had come.

It is one of the things I find so fascinating about good concept design. Often to make a piece of fictional technology seem believable you have weigh the plus and minuses of its design. Very much like how an engineer must balance various different, often conflicting, requirements to create some device.

Canards actually do exist as real/natural planes, though they aren't very common.  They actually allow for some rather unique designs and a variety of flight characteristics.

They have their trade-offs and minuses but any design is a collection of pluses and compromises.

Are those two nose gun openings under the front canards?

Baron-Engel In reply to Veteran1972 [2015-05-07 05:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I imagined a total of four fixed forward firing weapons. A rifle caliber machine guns on the top ports and a 20mm cannon on each of the lower ports. Rear defense would come in the form of a rear gunner with a single flexible rifle caliber machine gun.
