Description While Rainbow Dash is dancing in the clouds link Luna is confronting a less enjoyable task.

Luna’s research into the magic from the Kingdom of Shadows is slowly continuing to bear fruit in my Equestria dreamscape, although it is a bitter harvest.

Since her first discovery of the nightmare spells/ seeds in Applebloom’s dream fabric, the Princess of the Moon had wondered by what mechanism the spells were able to regenerate themselves. Initially she had suspected that spell did not use all of its magical potential when it erupted and that some was left in reserve to reform the spell for its next cycle.

However after now witnessing a half dozen of them she had discarded that theory. The sheer violence of the eruptions and speed at which they regenerated to did not imply any attempt at conservation magical energy for future regeneration and Luna was beginning to think that something much more sinister was occurring but she was uncertain. Fortunately she was not just triggering the spells she was actually extracting them so couldn’t regenerate. Still she desired to understand the mechanics of the spell.

It was early morning and Luna had just relinquished her command to Celestia. She had returned to her quarter and was giving her mane a quick brushing before retiring to bed. As she is prone to do Luna levitated over one of her notebooks related to Applebloom’s case and began randomly flipping through pages. She wasn’t searching for anything in particular just looking at various tidbits of information she come across related to Applebloom’s condition.

Amongst her notes was a bit of random writing, a piece of information she’d gleaned from her most recent dream walk through my own dream fabric looking for phantom memories and thoughts left over from when Paynes Gray resided in me. One note she’d written caught her attention.

It was just a short sentence, it seemed too not be connected to anything in particular but since it was associated with Paynes she’d hastily jotted it down. She read it aloud to the empty room.

“The worm that burrows deep into the fruit finds not only shelter, but food to sustain it for many a day.”

Luna dropped the note and stared in horror at it. Suddenly the pieces seemed fall into place in her mind, but she needed proof to be absolutely certain. Her duties to the court would not allow her to physically travel to Sweet Apple Acres that evening, but she could still test her theory.

That evening between meetings she retired to her room. She informed the guards posted outside her quarters that she wish to not be disturbed for the next half hour and she closed and locked the doors to her room.

Luna lied down on to her bed, then closed her eyes and sent her mind hurtling into the dream realm, since she was intimate with Applebloom’s dream fabric she had little trouble locating it amongst her many subjects. Quickly she sought out the first seed that had alerted the Apple family to the little filly’s condition.link Luna had not attempted to reactivate or extract it since it was not a particularly large one and based on her estimates would not erupt again for another nine months.

Slowly the seed was growing and reforming, but she already knew that. What Luna was attempting to determine was by what mechanism was the spell reforming. She began to examine the seed’s own magical signature, she wanted to know from what source it drew its potency from.

After several minutes later she had the answer, once again her disgust in the Deception and its practices was renewed. The spell seeds drew their potency from their victims. Not only did the spells torment their victims but also they fed on them like parasites sustain themselves. Every time they activated it consumed a bit more of the little filly’s life force. Eventually the spells would consume their host; Luna was uncertain at that point whether the victim would die or something worse and she wasn’t about to find out.

In her heart Luna had suspected that this was the source of spells power, but now there was no doubt for her. This presented her with an even greater challenge since every time she tripped one of those seeds it took a little bit more of Applebloom’s life, and there were still at least a couple dozen seeds left in the little filly. If she could not find a way to stop them from erupting when she removed them how much of Applebloom’s life would she be taking from little filly? Was it a couple days, a few weeks, or perhaps entire years?

Luna had the answers she had come looking for; before she departed Luna took a look around at Applebloom’s dream fabric. In spite of everything the little filly had been forced to endure her fabric was still beautiful and vibrant. It spoke of years of love and nurturing by family, friends and community. The mesh was strong and a colorful mixture of ultramarine, green, golden-yellow, red and rich brown.

By the Moon! Luna would not let the Deception’s final act be the destruction of this little filly. Before those spell seeds could wreck this filly’s beautiful mind she’d crushed everyone these cursed seeds. It would be done!

To be continued.

Bloody hell. Deception, you little piece of crappy black ooze. You're a terrible, terrible creature.

I may have or have not asked this question, but since I don't remember, I'll ask again. Forgive me if it's the 2º time.

Are you familiar with the anima Full Metal Alchemist?

Oh the Deception is foul, vile being!

Oh I loved the series in particular I really like the Brotherhood series. I am absolutely certain that Pride had a huge influence on my subconscious.

Well yes, Pride too. But I was thinking more of the original Humunculus, the Man in the Jar. Both of them tried to open a 'celestial door' of some sort, though the Man in the Jar suceeded. It's funny how the two of them ended just being punched to death by an individual incapable of doing magic. It's always pleasant to see Mr IamSoPowerful dying that way.

I think Deception is more twisted and cruel, though.

Well what makes a Deception so horrible is that it grows stronger the more it can twist and distorts its host. It feeds on tormenting and breaking its host to become something they are not. They are living lies in a sense.

Yes it is problem that Royal Sisters will be dealing with for awhile. The Lord of Shadows and his realm may be gone. The Deception ripped from Applebloom, but still there actions continue to resonate through Equestria still.

Not surprised given that the deception was something of a parasite itself.  Luna certainly has a real tough problem to solve though; I wonder if she'll consult with the apple family about her latest discovery before attempting to remove any more of those seeds.

Baron-Engel In reply to Belvarius [2013-09-17 15:36:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes she will consult with all the members of the immediate family, including Applebloom, and let them know of her findings. However even if she is unable to develop a method to remove the seeds without triggering them they have to come out because leaving them in Applebloom is even worse. It may be a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. And the Deception loved things like that.

Belvarius In reply to Baron-Engel [2013-09-17 18:48:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the seeds must be removed if for no other reason than they will continue to torment Applebloom for the rest of her life (however long that may now be) if they are simply left in there.  They also need to be removed and destroyed simply because we (the audience at least) don't know if the seeds only purpose was to torment Applebloom or if they have some other more sinister purpose as well.  Leaving them in Applebloom is simply an unacceptable risk.

In a past posting someone commented that when this was all done Applebloom definition of "a normal life" and that of the average pony maybe very different.

I had the same reaction as Luna when I read that sentence. And now I can't help but worry about how much time has been taken away from Applebloom already.

That is the burning question in Luna's mind. Now more than ever she trying to find a way to remove the seeds without activating them. Besides her exposure to them is start making itself known to her.

AJ killed the Deception too quick and painlessly. On the bright side, though, that's one field of magic that won't have the usual "just discovered" grace period before being outlawed.

But now Luna wants to see if she can extract those seeds without activating them period, since everytime one activates it is sucking a little of Applebloom's life force away.

Well, I do have a Spec Ops: The Line-esque bloodfest with "portal storms", plenty of clawings from me that progressively got more and more aggressive, and somehow, sometimes rather disturbing "cutscenes". all while I knew I dreaming, and even enjoyed it at moments. Sadly, as it now horrifies me...

So yeah, we are messed up I guess.

Feeding on the victim doesn't surprise me. It also would seem to allow the seed-spell to have that little bit of energy needed to endure after erupting and begin regenerating.

But I have to wonder if she's verified there isn't something generating new seeds after she removes them?

Baron-Engel In reply to EarlMcClaw [2013-09-16 16:39:56 +0000 UTC]

So far she's found no new seeds appearing in previously uncorrupted areas but she is keeping an eye out for it.

EarlMcClaw In reply to Baron-Engel [2013-09-17 03:59:33 +0000 UTC]

So it's unlikely there's a "spell-seed creche" sending them out, and they're not designed to spawn copies. Yeah, either of those would have been nasty.

Baron-Engel In reply to EarlMcClaw [2013-09-17 04:59:29 +0000 UTC]

However Celestia is still concerned about the possibility of what could amount to spell spores infecting Luna due to prolonged exposure. However once again there has been no evidence of this occurring. But there are many facets about the magic from the Kingdom of Shadows that remain a mystery that it still a source of uncertainity.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EarlMcClaw In reply to Baron-Engel [2013-09-17 17:03:14 +0000 UTC]

It's a valid concern, especially if Deceptions have any experience with people (ponies) removing their spells. And without, it's still mind-magic; there's a chance of some form of contagion or meme, not to mention the stress of doing the removal and having another's life/mind/health as your responsibility.
