Description
Giuseppe Belli had high sweet soprano voice and was always described as beautiful or graceful. He became very popular singer in Dresden fast - his popularity rised even more after the premiere of Hasse's opera L'Olimpiade on 16th February 1756 which was the last opera by Hasse performed in Dresden. The story is set in Ancient Greece during the Olympic Games and is about rivalry in love and characters doing almost all they can do to win their loved one.
Belli played the role of Licida (Lycidas) who is believed to be the son of the king of Crete and is in love with Aristea. However, his best friend Megacle is in love with her as well. In the story of L'Olimpiade Licida even tries to murder the king.
All arias for Belli are really magical in this opera but especially the one of them was viewed as the most beautiful - "Consola il genitore ".
Ernst Ludwig Gerber (German composer and an author of a dictionary of musicians) said that he "moved everyone to tears" with this aria.
Consola il genitore is truly challenging for the singer. Only accompaniment of this piece is harpsichord plus the piece itself is very demanding in terms of intonation and dynamics - some parts also rise to the extreme hights.

Very beautiful aria! I prefer Simone's interpretation because of the tempo and her warm expression, but Randall has a remarkable voice indeed! Singing softly and expressively with a beautiful pure sound, rich in expressive nuances is really challenging for the singer. This aria also requires longer breaths. Live performance is more difficult than studio recording in this respect.
We can imagine that Giuseppe's voice is more tender and softer than Randall's voice and also higher and more pure than the voice of Simone. An extremely pure, melodious and sweet soprano voice!
We see three more castrati in the same casting: Angelo Maria Monticelli, Pasquale Bruscolini and Giuseppe Perini.

I have to agree with you on that!
I also prefer Simone's interpretation (I prefer it also due to sentimental reasons ✨ This was probably the 1st baroque aria I've ever heard so her version means a lot to me in this aspect as well ✨)
I can imagine how difficult it is (even though I'm no musician myself).
Yes Giuseppes voice was described like that ✨
And thank you so much!! ❤️Your comments mean a lot! It's really fun to draw Belli and I'm definitely going to draw him more in the future.
Awww thanks for the link ✨ And since you mentioned Pasquale and Angelo - I actually have finished sketches of them that just need to be colored so some posts about them are going to be published soon ❤️
Thanks for your comment again!
