It is hard to describe the feeling of seeing Mt Fuji in person for the first time.

My first time was as a passenger in a bus, I was napping and my girlfriend woke me and pointed out the window, Mt Fuji was looming over the buildings. It was a breathtaking sight for someone who comes from Australia, the flattest continent on the planet.

Over the next week, I saw Fuji San constantly, even from the top of the world’s steepest roller coaster: each time it never failed to take my breath away.

I understand when Japanese people say it is more than a mountain, it is a spiritual experience.
