Description Now that the John Lewis Christmas ad is out, I can share this!  Before I got the job, it was a little uncertain whether they were going to use me or not, and I have NEVER animated anything to this level of realism, so I definitely felt out of my element.  So I took Aaron Blaise's awesome Bear and Hare designs and did my own test in hopes to "cram" for the final.  From what I heard, they showed it to Aaron, and it sounded like they were looking for something a little more subtle.  So oddly enough, he saw my "God forgot about me" piece and that is what sold him.  Either way, I got the job and the rest is history!  It was an awesome experience working with Aaron, Dominic, and Premise Entertainment, and I am incredibly happy about how the final product turned out and the reaction to it.

Nice to see who was involved on it that came from here, congratulations!

Thanks, man!  Aaron Blaise was the main guy.  He handled all the Bare and Hare stuff, while Dominic Carola supervised the team animating all the background characters which I was involved in.

Sweet! No idea you worked on this. I really enjoyed it and it was wonderfuly produced. I saw the production video the other day. I do love traditional and yet new ways of animating.

Same here!  I was really surprised that they were going to do it that way, but they pulled it off amazingly!

I had no Idea that you worked on the animation for this!
Wow, that is truly awesome. I had seen the ad some days ago, so it's really cool to see some rough animation from it.
Congrats on the job, the whole thing turned out beautiful.

This was never in the advert.  This was a test I did on my own time to try and train myself on how to draw/animate Aaron Blaise's Bear and Hare characters.  I never ended up animating the Bear or Hare, that was all Aaron.  I animated some of the background characters.

Oh, well still this is some great animation. I especially love when the hair jumps and sort of buck-kicks it's hind legs. Great movement there.
Which background characters did you animated in particular?

Thanks! My sister had a rabbit that would "buck" like that, so I had to put it in there. Haha! The one scene that is all my animation is the two birds hanging the ornament. I did most of the owl character except the shot where you're looking at him from behind. I did the badger that's hanging the ornament, the deer pulling an ornament, and some head-turns and tail wiggles.

Had to do a search on YouTube just to see for reference -- it definitely looks like your work, and with the word out about the advert, I'm sure it'll boost your chance for a successful indiegogo funding for DogTown

Let's hope!  Get more of that traditional 2D out there!  Haha!  The Bear and Hare were all Aaron Blaise.  I just worked on some of the background characters.

Oh wow!  That's so awesome you got to work on that add!  It's really beautiful and the characters really appealing!  Did you go to England to do this or just worked from home?

All the character animation was done in a studio here in Orlando.  So none of us went to England.  That would have been cool though!  Haha!  Thanks for the kind words!  I am really happy to be a part of that project.

It's a pretty neat piece, and I hope it gets you more work with Premise.

That being said, if I hadn't watched the "making of", I would have thought all the 2D elements were handled in composite. Being as I could not tell they weren't until I saw the video, I wonder what the benefit was for doing all that work with die cuts and stop-motion?

At any rate, the animation looked awesome. I hear you worked on the background critters, anything in particular that stands out?

basakward In reply to Inkthinker [2013-11-14 16:41:39 +0000 UTC]

The biggest benefit (if you want to call it that) of doing it that way is the lighting.  All the shadows that are cast on the environment are REAL shadows, and they chose an extra thick card stock so they could reflect a natural rim light off the edge.  But for all the extra work, I'm hesitant of calling that a "benefit".  Haha!  I think it's mostly done that way because it has never really been done that way before.

I did work on the background characters.  The one shot that is completely mine are the two birds hanging the ornament.  The owl is mostly mine except for the shot where you're looking at him from behind.  The deer walking backwards, dragging an ornament is mine.  The badger hanging the Christmas ornament is mine.  And I did a lot of bits and pieces like head turns and "tail wiggles".

Thanks for the kind words, man!  It means a lot coming from you!
