Description Now that the John Lewis Christmas ad is out, I can share this!  Before I got the job, it was a little uncertain whether they were going to use me or not, and I have NEVER animated anything to this level of realism, so I definitely felt out of my element.  So I took Aaron Blaise's awesome Bear and Hare designs and did my own test in hopes to "cram" for the final.  From what I heard, they showed it to Aaron, and it sounded like they were looking for something a little more subtle.  So oddly enough, he saw my "God forgot about me" piece and that is what sold him.  Either way, I got the job and the rest is history!  It was an awesome experience working with Aaron, Dominic, and Premise Entertainment, and I am incredibly happy about how the final product turned out and the reaction to it.

This is amazing! What are those K and B in some frames? Sorry for being such a newbie hahaha also, do you watched a real bear and hare to animate this? It's so well done!

basakward In reply to Dellirium [2014-12-03 19:21:42 +0000 UTC]

I did watch some bear footage a little bit before I animated this. The "K" stands for "Keyframe". Keyframes are the main "core" drawings that I use to block out the motion. "B" stands for "Breakdown" which are drawings I put between the Keyframes to help establish the motion. Hope that makes sense.

It is really impressive ! You know how to capture the moments, the expressions of the bear are juste perfect, it's like in the movie "brother bear" of Disney !

What software do you use for making your animations ?

Thank you for such kind words!  For this I used Plastic Animation Paper, but now I'm using TVPaint.

I animated some of the background animals, that's it. Aaron Blaise animated all of the bear and hare scenes.

You did a great job. (with both)
It must have been quite an experience either way.

I feel like sometimes you can spend an eternity building up foundational skills but not realizing what you can do with them until the task comes along.

Yeah, it was an awesome experience.  It makes all the difference when you have awesome co-workers who help you out when it's needed.

Pharan In reply to basakward [2014-06-03 17:10:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I can imagine.

I love reading lucidly and coherently-written books on art stuff.
But it's such a huge and different kind of help to have other people who are actually there to work with.
Though I think even just looking at real pros working helps put things into perspective.
Not to take away from actual words they're able to share, there's also so much to learn just from seeing the order in which they do things and how much time they spend on which parts and all sorts of little things.

It's inspiring to hear your story here. And, again, I love this animation, and certainly God Forgot About Me too. I hope you make many more!

You worked on "The Bear and the Hare"?? That's awesome!!!
It should have been great working with Aaron Blaise!!

basakward In reply to Archon89 [2014-01-02 19:32:05 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! He was an awesome teacher. He was really patient with me and when things needed changing, he would say it in a very kind way. I tried to absorb as much as I possibly could in such a short amount of time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Archon89 In reply to basakward [2014-01-02 20:41:31 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!! "The Bear and the Hare" was just a beautiful piece of hand-drawn animation, it's just too bad that these times CGI animation is becoming predominant, cutting out the good old "2D"... I am glad to see the there are still some projects like this one!
I kinda recognized the stile in the bear of this short similar to the one of "Brother Bear", one of my favourite Disney movies ever. I was so thrilled when I learned that Blaise was indeed behind that, it was one of the directors of that movie! It must have been quite an honor..

Thank you for your answer, and keep it up!!!

basakward In reply to Archon89 [2014-01-10 14:47:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.  They wanted Aaron Blaise because they wanted a bit of "Brother Bear" in there.  Again, I am super happy I had the opportunity to work on this project.
