I must say this is one fantastic idea for animation; I did watch one short film made this way and it was absolutely awesome. I too wanted to do something like this a year ago but never got enough time for it.

Animation starts at 1:30 with all the characters doing mundane things, then it gets all trippy by the end (with the effect you are looking for)
I just noticed there are -some- transitions, still very close.

So are these going to be on 1's and do a slow transition into each character, or are you doing everything on 1's? I'm trying to wrap my head around how this is going to look, but whatever you choose I'm sure it's going to be super rad!

It's all going to be on twos. No transitions or anything. So hopefully in the end it's going to look like a flurry of tons of different character designs, but all of them are following one single movement. It might not work. It might look terrible in the end. That's why I'm labeling it as an experiment. Haha!
