I'm thinking Hero isn't all there in his head like he used to be. Whenever is talking to Steve either is Notch or Hero.
So either:
A. Steve was there to trick Hero as ordered by Notch to find out what his brother was doing.
or
B. Steve sided with Hero in something big but it didn't turn out as well as they thought.
From what we can gather, the two brothers had a falling out clearly, and Hero lost.Β
I'm also thinking Hero isn't fully 'there' as he used to be. Like he's a shadow of some kind also by this point.Β
But we still are very early into the comic.Β
