Not an asshole, but more well intentioned extremist. I think considering his position he cannot afford to love humans as individual, especially considering his position where he is a litteral god that must guide and protect them, he cannot afford to do that as even if he were to devellop closer bonds than that of a master, servitor, he will outlive them anyway, even taking into consideration that being incredibly old thanks to immortality, it's not surprising at all considering his experience that he consider them to be flawed, as they do not share the same wisdom that life granted him.
But he does love Humanity and the people he protect, let's not forget that his reason to stop Hero is because he perceive he is a threat not only to him, but to mankind and the realms as whole.
Do not forgot how Hero ruled his people after his fall from grace (the whole mess where he got wrongly accused by villagers he was supposed to protect), he was a murderous tyrant, no wonder Notch who believe in order and protection decided that he was too much of a threat to all mortals.
