Description
I decided to do a sighthound tutorial to help people get a little variety into their repitoir since I've noticed that most canine artists draw wolves, huskys, etc. Some basic tips. Feel free to ask any questions. If you would like to see something added feel free to request it.
MEGA-EDIT!!!
Alright, so, this tutorial is now, new and improved! Way better then the last one. I completely re-vamped the thing, adding new, better pictures and better, more accurate information. Hope you guys enjoy the changes because you'll never see the original again.

Excellent tutorial. It's rather frustrating that a lot of canine art you see, even when it's not meant to be a wolfish breed, still manages to look that way. Especially molossers. I like this a lot.

Thanks for doing this! Sighthouds are my favourite type of dog, plus my fursona is based off a pharoah hound, so this will help a lot!

Gorgeous tutorial, it's a great separation from all the generic, rainbow-colored wolves and huskies I've seen floating about DA. Personally, I love sighthounds...gorgeous dogs.

Not to be too nitpicky (okay, yeah, it's nitpicky, so sue me), but some of your dog terms are a little wacky. The 'erk' ear is more properly termed '
rick' eared, the folded ear should be a 'drop' ear. In regards to coats, it should be smooth (short, slick hair), wire (deerhounds, wire haired Ibizans, etc.), or coated (long coats like Silken windhounds, Afghan hounds, Borzoi.) Feathering refers specifically to hair on the legs, ears, and tails in sighthounds. Salukis come in smooth and feathered. An Afghan or Borzoi would be considered a 'coated' dog, not a 'feathered' one. The 'waist' on a sighthound is called the 'tuck.'
A couple of suggestions: use a side view to illustrate slenderness, so the depth of brisket and tuck are clearly seen, and add a section on heads. I see a lot of sighthound illos with way too much stop (the bit at eye level where the muzzle ends and the forehead begins.) Sighthounds typically have very little stop and some have very distinctive head shapes, like Borzoi and Afghans. Don't forget the short-haired saddle Afghans have on the back.
Otherwise, quite nifty! Good job.

Just so you know, I am doing a new and improved version of this, with more accurate terms and better visuals. I made this version when I was 17, young, and inexperienced. I'm 20 now and know better. Thank you for your suggestions. ^.^

Thanks! I'm drawing up a trade with Swift, and this is seriously helping. *laughs* All my canines are mutts and the one little random corgi that I haven't quite figured out yet, so...this is helpful. :3

Oh, wow, thank you! I've been meaning to expand my breeds away from wolves and towards other canines, and this will be a big help!

This is just wonderful! Sighthounds just happen to be my favorite group... Right after herding dogs. In fact, I was going to adopt a retired racer (Greyhound) before we got my GSD with a horrible temperament... This reminds me, I need to go finish up a grey pic.

Cool, they're my favorites. ^.^ I would love to own a retired racer, but I can't until I have my own place (which might take a while 'cause I'm living at home while I go to college). Yeah, some GSDs can have serious temperment problems, though that's true of most breeds. My Lab's breeder is a registered vet tech and refuses to ever own a GSD because they have a bad tendency to be fear biters, which can be very dangerous if it gets hurt and you don't have a muzzle handy. They are gorgeous dogs, though.

Heh, we're lucky that my GSD, Jayda, has a vet that owns a Belgian Malanois with temperament problems, so he understands how to handle Jayda. We have to keep her muzzled at the vet now, but she's actually getting more socialized... Even though she's AKC registered, I believe we got ger from a back-yard-breeder. I won't list the reasons, because they go on and on...

I'm a dog trainer, working up to having my own kennel, grooming, and training facility (someday I hope) This is a really awesome tutorial. I've never worked with a sighthound before, I don't even know anyone who owns one. But this is nice to read not just for those who want to draw sighthounds but also for those who want to learn as much as they can about dogs of all kinds. This is awesome! Great job.

That's spiffy. And a nice thing to do for people who are not familiar with the SH breeds. I think it looks good. *shrugs* but if you want something to add, you could do a thing on their feet. Most have tight cat feet, unlike regular dogs that have flat feet. You could also do a demo on how they run in a triple-suspension gallop for people who want to draw them running. Most dogs run like horses, and I've seen some pretty strange drawings of greyhounds running like regular dogs.

I'm glad you have your approval, QG. Thankyou for your suggestions, I'm working on adding them right now.
I hate to correct you, but I believe more have hare feet. Hare feet allow for more contact with the ground, which would be appropriate for sprinters. Cat feet are usually in breeds that need greater endurance such as the Akita and Doberman Pinscher as the feet require less energy to keep them going because of the smaller bone structure.

Queen-of-Greyhounds In reply to basi [2006-06-01 23:39:47 +0000 UTC]
Yes you are right! A Greyhound has what is called a "hareβs foot" and they do look like long jackrabbit feet. But their toes are curled up tight in what is called a "catβs foot" which is perfect for running over hard ground. If they had flat feet that were spread out, their paws would be killing them by the end of a hunt. At least that's what my "Sighthounds Afield" book tells me. So yea, I wasn't very clear on that, sorry.
And if you get the chance PLEASE DO read "Sighthounds Afield" [link] It's full of amazing sighthound info. It's like an orgasm for your brain! I recommend it to all hound nuts. :3

You are lucky it went down in price! I paid $50 for my copy last year. X( But yea, if you can get it then great! It has no colored pictures, but it does have b/w photographs and funny cartoons. It is big and fat too. All the info you will ever need!

Oops. I know I should have said "double" when I said "triple-suspension." That was a dumb mistake. Sorry ^__^* But whippets can run in a triple-suspension gallop. I don't think any other sighthound can though.
