Base stood in the factory he'd chased Ace into. Base had taken residence in Downunda so long ago, but had been there so long it had become his second home; he had loved ones, he had friends and family, Ace always seemed to appear when things were at their worst for him, always.

This time, Base had just returned from the Great Forest, after escaping Cyber City with Windy, he'd been critically injured, and was life flighted by Dulcy back to the Great Forest for emergency treatment. He knew that Windy had taken it hard that Veejay wouldn't allow her to go with him, but Windy had been in hysterics over his condition, and Veejay couldn't risk Windy's emotions from getting the best of her up North.

Upon returning, Windy had become cold, and distant from Base, angry, he had tried approaching her as if nothing had happened, Windy let into him, calling him wreckless and selfish.

The harebit; Magellan had been no help, he had made the situation worse with a single sentence,"The sexual tension in this room is so thick you could spread it on toast."

Despite Magellan being there for treatment, Windy had actually turned and slugged him. Realizing what she'd done, she apologized quickly; Base left her to her work.

It had been that way for weeks now, and it only seemed to get worse, the two argued non-stop. Then Ace showed up, he had made absolutely sure to get Base's attention quickly by taking Windy hostage.

"Y'know, in my world, y'work with sis too, 'cept you're NUN of th' things y'are here...see its funny cause-"

He hadn't finished, Base was on him like a rabid wolf, Ace slipped away and the chase was on. Here Base had chased him into Veejay's sanctuary, the abandoned factory.

The darkness had always served Ace well in hiding from Base, so much so one time he'd actually had to trap him in a snare trap.

"Y'know me, I think I liked your quills better long." the voice echoed in the darkness.

Base scanned the room, trying to find the source,"You fucking bastard! Shut the hell up and get out here and fight me like a man!"

"But I'm a ninja!"

"YOU'RE NOT A FUCKING NINJA!"

"Hehe, guess that makes sis a NUNja!"

"YOU KNOW I DON'T GET THAT JOKE!"

"Bleh. Party pooper."

A loud noise, like a trumpet,"I FARTED, ME!"

Base's temper was growing exceptionally short, he drew his sword and threw it into the darkness,"YOU FUCKING C*NT! I SAID GET OUT HERE!"

Silence, Ace stepped from the darkness,"Fucking potty mouth."

Base rushed him, grabbing him by the front of his jacket and hauling him off the ground,"I'm going to fucking END you!"

"Aww...I was always hoping to bring you to the brink!"

"SHUT UP! I'VE GOT ENOUGH PROBLEMS WITH WINDY WITHOUT YOU TRYING TO ADD TO THEM!" Base spat into his face.

Ace chuckled, he laughed, he smiled wide,"But this is all connected, me! Don'tcha see?! I'm like yer best buuuuuud!"

Base slammed Ace against a wall,"FUCKER! I HATE YOU! I ABSOLUTELY HATE YOU! DON'T YOU DARE-"

Ace only grinned at Base,"C'mon, me. Think about it. I've always been there for you, I'm your safe place."

Base pulled back his fist,"You sick mother fu-"

Ace didn't even blink,"When life has you at its lowest, I'm always there, giving you something to lash out at. I'm ALWAYS there, always there FOR you. When life is shittiest; I'm there. When relationship troubles are at your door; Guess who? When loved ones DIE; I AM THERE FOR YOU!"

Base's eyes narrowed, he thought of caving Ace's face in, his fist shook, but his mind went back, wasn't it all true? Was it?

When Celes left for the Floating Island; Ace showed up, and distracted him from that sadness. When the Dimension Pirates trapped him in between dimensions with Syclone; Bunnie and Rotor claimed that Ace was the one to haul them out. When Bunnie broke his heart, before he left for Downunda again; Ace was there with another scheme. When Mission died; Ace again. Now, here, troubles with Windy, here was Ace again, taking a beating from Base, giving him something to FOCUS his negative feelings on, something to lash out at.

Base's stomach knotted, he felt sick, was he really such a monster? Was he? That he was taking out so much hate on another being? On himself? He hated himself, sure, but so much that he had become his own tool for anger? Base let go of Ace's collar, he dropped to his knees, his arms sagged to the floor.

"Dear...god...I'm...what kind of person am I?" his whole body shook, the world around him faded, and sound left, and he went numb. Base's lip trembled, he felt like he would puke. He felt like scum, like the lowest, most worthless piece of trash.

He felt a hand rest on his head and rub back on his top quill,"Sis always taught me, me, that if you don't look out for yourself, no one else gonna do it for ya. Now I know I don't talk good, I know what and who I am. We're cut from different cookie trays, but yer me n' I'm you. You hate yourself, I love myself, and you're me, so I look out for ya. I just do it the way I can."

Ace leant forward and kissed Base's head behind his ear,"I guess I just love me so much it stretches to other worlds. Try n' f'rget this conversation though, me, I don't need you goin' soft on me next time."

Ace walked towards the door, and stepped outside,"See ya next time, me. Y'ain't as alone as ya think, know that."

The door shut, and Base was in the dark, alone.

The door flew open, the metal slamming into the wall, Veejay's voice boomed through the factory,"Base! BASE!"

Base looked in the direction of the doorway, Veejay, Windy, and Antony stood in the door.

Ant cupped his mouth,"Bazzes! Come outs!"

Windy looked around, she looked worried. Base's mouth slowly curled into a small smile,"I'm...not alone."
