Sam Discovers he likes performing.

Essentially he was just a mascot at the circus he was made for at first, greeting people at the gates. As time went by, he got really interested in learning about how the performers at the circus practiced their craft - especially the ones who performed on the fair grounds for smaller crowds, as opposed to the huge showy stuff on the main stage (heights?? fire??? high stakes?? no thanks).
Sam's dexterity can often seem surprising considering his stunted grem fingers, and he struggled a lot at first with more nuanced slight of hand.

He didn't actually pull off the trick here very well, but the kids seemed thrilled when he (nearly accidentally) pulled their card.

He goes on to ask his owner, the owner of the circus, if he could possibly train to be a part of a small act.
