I picked up Deathnote #13 last weekend, and I've been inspired to make an L character ever since! Yea L! ^^
Here's my take on Deathnote's L, (version 6). Got more work to do on him, but I'm liking that freaky stressed-out no-sleep look. -^
Making a realistic version of an Anime / Manga character gets even more complex when there's already been a live action movie with L. What I tried to do here is stay true to the original idea for L, based on information provided in Deathnote #13:
1) The creators said he was 25% Celtic, 25% French, 25% Japanese, and 25% Russian.
2) Those are supposed to be dark circles under L's eyes, not eyeliner. So how do you make a realistic L (with dark circles under the eyes) look like L we know from Anime and Manga, and the Movie? I tried combining the 2 styles for my L.

QUESTION:
1) Is that a t-shirt L wears or is it a sweater?
2) Could reason for the shape of L's, Near's, and Mello's eyes be Hyperthyroidism triggered eye protusion? Could this also explain L and Mello's sweet cravings? [link]
3) Could the reason for L's eye shape be Marfan syndrome, a connective tissue disorder? Could Marfan syndrome also explain the way L sits, and the way he sloches when he stands? [link] [link]
4) Some people think L may be Autistic. I disagree 100%. L does not have trouble relating to people, manipulating people, and thinking fast on his feet. He's classic Enneagram Type 5 personality, The Investigator: [link]

I personally find alot of Autistic or Aspergers characteristics with both Near and L. For your reasoning why he doesn't..you gotta remember its a spectrum...in other words it varies. I don't think the creator had the intention of making neither Near nor L Autistic or an Aspie. Autistic people CAN think on their feet..They tend to find one thing that really interests them and obsesses over it.(That sound like anyone?) May sit or walk differently,social akwardness,not really having fear to what other people might pee their pants over..the list goes on. Also do remember (once again) Aspergers and Autism are a spectrum so all those things will vary in severity. I also have an Autistic brother, and I found it funny how L and Near seemed very Aspie or high functioning Autistic while watching and reading Death Note. Sorry for the huge length of this comment ^_^', but L or Near seeming to be Aspie/Autistic shouldn't stop our love for them!..and give people with the actual disability a chance.

About overdilated pupils.
Mello has not always overdilated pupils.
- L looks rather sickly (and i think he is) and i have read some physical disease have overdilated pupils between symptoms
- Near can't stay under sunlight because he is an albino, and being always in dark places, his pupils look rather dilated due to lacks of light.
I think overdilated pupils are made to make L, Near and Mello recognizable as Wammy kids. They have other similar traits.

3) yeah i think that too. although it may be a coicidence for the authors of deathnote, but i can totally see the symptoms...and i should know too because i have Marfan's. me and L both have the long fingers, skinny figure, sleep problems, the slouch. damn, even the high IQ thing, but that could be a fluke. so i agree on that idea.

A. No. It would have to be a normal T-shirt, because it folds more 'floppy' like thing cotton, whereas a sweater would stay closer to the body, or further away due to the weight of the material.

A. I doubt it. If I remember, the eyes were from insomnia. All of which could be in the three. And I think the sugar is more of a habit. Also, I think the round eyes may just be how the how the characters are drawn.

A. L said he sits the way he does, because of how the human boy works, if I remember correctly, this would trigger muscles in the ankles to work harder, but trigger muscles in other parts of the body to work less, balancing out, and allowing harder work on the mind. Sitting like that would tell the muscles to curve the spine, though, explaining the way he stands. Also, Insomnia again on the eyes.
I think I just killed my brain. 0-o.

You know, I think you are onto something with the Marfan syndrome. I actually have a friend that has this, and I only recognized it because of the image with the sunken chest (now I have a name for it!). And now thinking about it, my friend is very skinny, lanky, long limbs and slouches like crazy. I would have to look at a picture of him right now to see anything about his eyes, but he does have bad eyesight.
Loved the questions, totally made me think. And yes, L is NOT autistic! Thank you!

i just watched change the worLd a few days ago. 8.5/10 for me. there were several events that seem too convenient and some of matsuyama's actions were unlike how i picture L would be [typing & flipping the book]

I was Metrocon this weekend, many L cosplayers, but one of them was really good and the difference is the gestures. Without the L-like gestures, it just doesn't work as well.

By the way: L doesn't wear a t-shirt. He wears a long sleeve shit. (unless you're talking of L change the worLd. I haven't seen the movie yet so.. I don't know what he wears there. But knowing L.. it's probably the same long sleeve shirt that he usually wears...)
